all the reviews are damning, seems getting a vogue editor to curate an art show was not optimal

Jerry Hall somehow so weird I don't think she's American anymore but I don't think I could spend too much time in close proximity to her

Anne Carson! A reasonable-to-good pick, for my money. Nox and If Not Winter are really good books. It's also cool to award it to a translator

think the Nobel in Literature has really nailed intrigue because the list of laureates like 6-7/10 as Best Writers Since 1901. Any more and it's too obvious, any less and it's too shit

The BBC does genuinely seem to be trying to save money where it can; they scrapped an undercover investigation where Amol Rajan went out clubbing with a view to exposing the easy access to poppers because they didn't want to pay for the Amol night rate

it also has solidified me in my opinion that although Austerlitz is his most complete, most important and probably "greatest" work, Rings of Saturn is his best and most readable book. I find its subtlety absolutely astonishing

I feared the unpicking might ruin the stories for me. the books are at home in Norfolk (appropriately) so I can't check first-hand but I think they're safe so far. which is good

henry @runeberg.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
suppose the other option for the next book is one which leaves the detective work of school reports and whatnot to Angier and focuses on him as a literary figure in his own context. eg Javier Marías, who I think is his key contemporary really, only appears once in the whole book & in passing

think it would be game-changing if his widow cooperated and/or his correspondence was in an archive somewhere. possibility for a wildly different account, I assume more flattering

have now finished the Angier bte. I genuinely gasped with delight at the discovery that one of Sebald's sources was the great naturalist Ted Ellis. a name I've known for as long as I can remember because he was responsible for the lovely, haunting dioramas in Norwich Castle

it's also a thesis which relies on a level of historical ignorance which would be embarrassing in a GCSE student but we can put our differences to one side for a common cause here

would *anything* be lost analytically if we all agreed to stop calling things "post-material"? signs point to no!

which is also the driver behind a lot of anti-communism as a movement capable of inspiring improvised, extreme violence - the massacres of priests in 30s Spain and Russia is at the heart of the postwar European imagination in so so many places. I'll shut up now
020
henry @runeberg.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
also that clericalism/anti-clericalism remains a superlatively motivating dividing line in most European polities up until, like, the 70s? 80s? and as much as being a front in the Cold War as we imagine it, Europe is really fighting the battles of the French Revolution

henry @runeberg.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
this is sort of my great obsession. but to save time I'll limit myself to noting that "anti-communism" is a quite unhelpful word in a way because it implies a passive, inchoate sentiment when it was actually an intense ideological commitment for many groups, including para-state orgs and terrorists

Yes, definitely! Even if it's consent in the abstract, the ability to credibly enforce and to all-but-solve the collective action problem which dooms many issues with strong support remains a staggering exercise of power
