Switzerland's glacier report 2026 is out. Swiss glaciers have lost 5% of their ice volume this year. Only the last 5 years accounted for nearly 20% of the total ice loss across Switzerland. The numbers are devastating. Full report → doi.glamos.ch/pubs/annualr...

Decades-long-measurements in two sites in Switzerland show that the recent very warm and dry years have reduced the carbon sink of these spruce forests. With dry air, the trees rely mostly on water deep in the soil > will be more vulnerable in future. By @nbuchmann.bsky.social @ethz.ch. #ICOS2026SC

Projection has become reality 22 years ago, Christoph Schär et al. published a landmark paper in Nature explaining that the 2003 heatwave was a harbinger of things to come. The study featured an iconic figure - shown in countless lectures - illustrating how outlandish the event was at the time

Not all heatwaves are created equal. In a major climate transition zone in China, we show that daytime, nighttime, and compound heatwaves are driven by distinct land–atmosphere processes. Compound heatwaves have increased fastest over the past four decades. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I started working on leaves and climate in 2012...still at it with some new tools (plant hydraulics - the plumping of the terrestrial biosphere) to try and predict interannual variation. Response to drought suggests an adaptive acclimate to leaf shedding. eos.org/editor-highl...

Excited to announce Groundsource - an open-source dataset of historic flood events! This has easily been one of the coolest projects I've worked on recently! Thread 🧵 for details and all relevant links. 1/n
A worldmap of the spatial distribution of extracted flood events in the Groundsource dataset. The map displays the total number of flood events extracted by the LLM-based pipeline aggregated per grid cell. The data are visualized using a Robinson projection, with event counts represented by a logarithmic color scale. Red points indicate the spatial centroids of reference flood events from the GDACS database.

🌲🌳🌐 New study reminds us that forests act globally as a #carbon sink Between 2001 and 2023, the world's #forests have absorbed 5.5 gigatonnes more #CO2 than they have emitted on average each year. 👉 Gibbs et al. dx.doi.org/10.5194/essd... 🧪
Figure 3 from the paper of Gibbs et al (2025) showing three maps respectively representing the amounts of greenhouse gas emmisions, removal, and net flux.

Caption from the paper: Forest-related GHG fluxes (annual average, 2001–2023). (a) Gross GHG emissions. (b) Gross CO2 removals. (c) Net GHG flux. Fluxes are aggregated to 0.04×0.04° (approximately 4×4 km) cells for display purposes. Publisher's remark: please note that the above figure contains disputed territories.
