Irrigation leaves a detectable pattern in soil moisture💧ESA-funded research mapped the locations of the main irrigated areas in the contiguous US. This method produced results that more closely matched official water-use statistics than the existing map alone. tinyurl.com/56jaktwr
Two maps compare irrigation across the United States; darker blue shows a larger irrigated share, and hatching marks cropland.

A study supported by ESA's Climate Change Initiative projects that Europe's forest carbon sink could decline 39% by 2030 as disturbances outpace recovery. Meeting the target needs a 28% harvest cut from 2025. 🌲 More: climate.esa.int/en/news-even...
Projected decline in the forest carbon sink in a business-as-usual scenario. The forest carbon sink is defined as the sum of five components: net carbon stock change in AGC, BGC, HWPs, deadwood (including litter), and soils. (a) Forest carbon sink of the EU-27. (b) Forest carbon sink of the five biogeographical regions, normalized by forest area (in hectare of forests, haF) to facilitate comparison.

Since 2018, Europe’s forests have been losing 46% more biomass per hectare disturbed forest each year than ever recorded. A new study has determined not just where Europe's forests were disturbed, but how much biomass disappeared along with them.🌲 Read more: climate.esa.int/en/news-even...
These images show the absolute severity (left) and relative severity (right) of above-ground biomass (AGB) density loss from European forests caused by natural disturbances and harvest. Absolute severity measures the loss of above-ground biomass after a disturbance, such as wind, fire or insect damage, or after tree harvesting. Relative severity is a percentage loss relative to the biomass measured before disturbance or harvest. Credit: ESA (data source: Kowalski et al. 2026).
