I think this is a great article that puts to words something I've been thinking for a while about LLMs/AI/etc; as tools they clearly can be useful and are here to stay, but the real concern should be the effect it's having on the talent pipeline. (1/5) ergosphere.blog/posts/the-ma...

An informational graphic for Google Summer of Code 2026 in collaboration with CGAL (Computational Geometry Algorithms Library).

Top Section: On the left, the Google Summer of Code logo is shown with key details: an application deadline of March 31, a commitment of 350 coding hours between May 1 and August 31, and a stipend of 5400 USD (Netherlands). On the right, the CGAL logo and website (www.cgal.org) are displayed.

Center Text: The graphic addresses the viewer, stating that if a person is a Master/PhD student or a Postdoc looking for a summer internship, they can participate in GSoC 2026. They would work with the CGAL Open Source Project to turn a research paper into a software component.

Bottom Section: The bottom left features a screenshot of an arXiv paper titled "Feature-aware manifold meshing and remeshing of point clouds and polyhedral surfaces with guaranteed smallest edge length" by Henriette Lipschütz, Ulrich Reitebuch, Konrad Polthier, and Martin Skrodzki.

Ever wondered how badly we're all addicted to buying new GPUs in graphics labs? Come see our talk at #SIGGRAPH2025 to discuss how we can collectively move "Towards a sustainable use of GPUs in Graphics Research" with @elie-michel.bsky.social @axelparis.bsky.social Octave Crespel and Felix Hähnlein
MOTIVATION
Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) are at the core of Computer Graphics research. These chips are critical for rendering images, processing geometric data, and training machine learning models. Yet, the production and disposal of GPUs emits CO2 and results in toxic e-waste [1].

METHOD
We surveyed 888 papers presented at SIGGRAPH (premier conference for computer graphics research), from 2018 to 2024, and systematically gathered GPU models cited in the text.

We then contextualize the hardware reported in papers with publicly available data of consumers’ hardware [2, 3].

Recent progress in multi-view 3D object capture is stunning! But is there a limit? In our upcoming #SIGGRAPH2025 paper "Uncertainty for SVBRDF Acquisition using Frequency Analysis," we show how to answer this question for material estimation. 1/6
The figure illustrates a pipeline for estimating uncertainty and spatially-varying material properties of a plush dinosaur toy. On the left, a rendered model shows the input: incoming lighting, the BRDF, and outgoing lighting from multi-view captures. Three plots in the center display spherical harmonics power spectra for incoming lighting, BRDF, and outgoing lighting. Right side: first, a colored uncertainty map (entropy) over the dinosaur surface is shown, computed within 0.5 milliseconds. Then, three images show estimated base color, roughness, and metallicity maps, computed in about 3 seconds.

I can appreciate these factoids, but they're the opposite of #teaching and #education. It enforces the stereotype that math is just a bunch of meaningless rules and creates the illusion of an in-crowd that understands the deep ✨mathematical✨ meaning. Also, happy new year!

New AI Snake Oil essay: Last month the AI industry's narrative suddenly flipped — model scaling is dead, but "inference scaling" is taking over. This has left people outside AI confused. What changed? Is AI capability progress slowing? We look at the evidence. 🧵 www.aisnakeoil.com/p/is-ai-prog...
Declaring the death of model scaling is premature.

Regardless of whether model scaling will continue, industry leaders’ flip flopping on this issue shows the folly of trusting their forecasts. They are not significantly better informed than the rest of us, and their narratives are heavily influenced by their vested interests.

Inference scaling is real, and there is a lot of low-hanging fruit, which could lead to rapid capability increases in the short term. But in general, capability improvements from inference scaling will likely be both unpredictable and unevenly distributed among domains.

The connection between capability improvements and AI’s social or economic impacts is extremely weak. The bottlenecks for impact are the pace of product development and the rate of adoption, not AI capabilities.
