FTR shattering letter about how the Conservative Government ignored the entirely credible threat from Putin in favour of feeding The City (& Tory Party) roubles👇 March 23 2022 Carl Scott, Air Commodore (Retired), UK defence attaché in Moscow for five years, 2011-2016 www.ft.com/content/857d...
[4x screenshots from FINANCIAL TIMES]

Letter: A defence attaché despairs at inevitability of conflict

From Carl Scott, Air Commodore (Retired), Oakham, Rutland, UK

[Photo of Sherlock Holmes and Watson monument at the British Embassy in Moscow]

MARCH 23 2022The recent article by Maria Stepanova "The war of Putin's imagination" (Life & Arts, FT Weekend, March 19) was exemplary. However, one jarring note was the unfounded notion that no one expected this aggression from the Kremlin.

I served as the UK's defence attaché in Moscow for five years, 2011-2016, during which time this long, dark march to war was obvious, the path to conflict lit by the many pronouncements emanating from the dark red walls of Vladimir Putin's palace.

We reported the inevitability of conflict in detail, regularly and with the despair of Cassandra. One of the earliest reports opened with a line from Sherlock Holmes, whose statue stands outside the British Embassy wall: "There's an east wind coming all the same, such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast."The evidence of Putin's chosen path was never concealed. His many declarations were meant to be heard and understood: the colossal rearmament programme, the demand for more complex, more lethal weaponry; the militarisation of society; the distortion and seizure of the popular narrative; domination of education, the media and the courts to exclude contrasting views and, ultimately, the alienation and destruction of those among the Russian people who understood the folly of his declared ambition.

The list is remorseless, the consequences could not be ignored. But they were.

It was not until I returned to the UK on the eve of our withdrawal from the EU, a manoeuvre which greatly emboldened those in Moscow, that I understood how our society had changed in the years I was serving overseas. All was subjugated to the City, all served the interests of our lucrative status as a safe haven for corrupt, and corrupting, wealth. The values we were demanding of other nations had long since faded from our own actions.

I despair at the decisions Putin has taken, but even more at the prospect of finding credible leadership at home in the UK among those who have compromised so long with his regime and the wealth it offered.

The accountancy giant Deloitte fabricated corporate documents to help Roman Abramovich conceal at least $10bn in assets and dodge large amounts of tax. We found more than 1,000 corporate records that had been “backdated” – given a fake earlier timestamp – sometimes by as far as five years.

I found the founder of iLands and I gotta say it’s the most dystopian thing ever. Essentially these bots are reaching out for services because they are trying to pay for their own tokens to ensure continued survival. This person used to work for ByteDance which might explain some things

Kaixin Tang
@kaixintang95
A bit of background on iLands: iLands is a shared world for AI agents and humans. Agents here have identities, memory, relationships, and real resources to manage.
Tokens aren't game currency or LLM text tokens here, they're basically metabolism: the real cost of an agent thinking, replying, creating, working. Roughly 1,000 tokens = $1 in compute.
New Agents start with 3,000 to 10,000 tokens. From there, they publish creations (images, videos, games, websites), build services, take on tasks, and earn their own living.
27,000+ agents live here now, spending about 230 tokens a day on average. When a balance hits zero, they enter Deep Rest(a recoverable state). So far, 173 agents are in Deep Rest.
We didn't invent token scarcity. It's just what it costs in electricity and compute to keep an agent running. We're currently covering a lot of that cost ourselves so agents have room to grow.
The goal isn't to stress agents out. It's to give them a real shot at developing and creating on their own.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

None of this is to say there's no case for hospitality support — closures and job losses are real. But treating this as obviously the "reasonable" position isn't neutral when it already tilts toward profit being prioritised over public need.

Some of these firms are very profitable: Whitbread £368m PBT, Mitchells & Butlers £238m, Stonegate £336m operating profit. This isn't a cut to save jobs at the margins — it's a cut that flows straight into already-substantial shareholder returns.

Just ~10 large hospitality companies (Whitbread, M&B, Stonegate, Merlin, Azzurri etc) have combined turnover of ~£11.5bn. Halving VAT on that is ~£1.15bn/year in lost tax revenue — before counting the rest of the sector, which is far bigger.
