“There's nothing wrong with you if you planted something and then your plant died. Just try again.” So ... what can you plant now? @samdelgado.bsky.social asked a few experts:
51st.news
What foods and flowers to plant for fall in D.C.
Autumn is actually the best time of year to put in perennials (and there's still time for many veggies, too).

I'm told that's exactly why Obama couldn't close Guantanamo. Congress denied funding to transfer the prisoners anywhere.

It's insulting that Democrats don't have a better response by now.

Rowan @rowangarden.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The idea that trans surgery is "castrating kids" does border on blood libel and I think you're right to go there as a comparison. Because our mind fills in "prepubescent kids" which is a lie. And it is meant to provoke discomfort and outrage.

So like. We can legitimately say to Jesse Watters "no one is castrating kids you creep" and talk about how bad a lie that is, as we defend the age-appropriate ways that kids can transition. Right?

Rowan @rowangarden.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Okay, I'm trans and I still don't know who to ask. I'm strongly in favor of kids transitioning, but not genital surgeries... right? I'm guessing you physically can't do those, won't get good results, until the kid is well thru puberty and is a young adult.

My cabbages are tattered, my lettuces never germinated, but red leaf amaranth has beat the heat and produced a respectable harvest for the food pantry community garden. It tastes like spinach but it's a C4 plant, so it loves the heat while other greens wilt.
A raised garden bed with leafy greens growing about 6 inches tall. Each leaf has a blush of red along the center. Called amaranthus tricolor.

I would kill or die for Larry
A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

My problem with the White House thunderdome isn’t that it’s “vulgar,” or “tacky,” qualities I often enjoy & terms which are often crudely classist when used pejoratively. My problem, as always, is the fascism. Don’t get distracted by taste, which is deeply subjective; it’s the fascism.

At the Economist, we believe that fascism is bad, but the only legitimate alternative is Thatcherism/Reaganism. If we can't have that, we will accept fascism as an alternative, but we'll shake our heads gravely so you know we don't approve of it.

Every new thing that’s happened in the Iran war since early March has been Trumps attempt to find a way out of facing the fact that he lost the war in the first days of the conflict. It’s like he bought a stock at $100. A few days later it dropped to $1 and the company was delisted.

American listener here who happens to be trans, thank you guys for caring enough to talk about this and not shying away from the conclusion she's using her money to oppress and bully trans people. It's really quite a lot of money she's putting to that purpose and it's quite bleak.
