The Forgotten Founder: Donald Currie and West Ham’s Scottish Roots
We honour Donald Currie, born 200 years ago, who founded Old Castle Swifts FC in 1892 - the Scottish-driven works team that served as the direct forerunner to Thames Ironworks and West Ham United.

It’s Monday! Have a safe and peace-filled week ahead 🙏 #MorningCommute #MorningPrayer "O Lord, open thou our lips, And our mouth shall show forth thy praise". "fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance."

Absolutely phenomenal film, local school children should be taken to see this movie honouring the memory of the Free French and the greatest ever Frenchman to ever set foot here in Greenock.

Smashing ride from Ardrossan to Saltcoats, up through the sand dunes at Stevenson, Ardeer nature reserve, then through the open countryside to Kilwinning, to watch a great game at Buffs Park on a very auspicious day for Kilwinning.

Seeing lots of new plans for securing Indy, not heard much about covenants. I admire the popular sovereignty and democratic governance found in Scots covenanting political theory. I feel that covenants have a role to play in this constitutional crisis. Unsure what that role is @douggay.bsky.social ?

I cycled from Kilmacolm to Johnstone today to watch Johnstone Burgh v Albion Rovers. I crossed 3 rivers - Gryffe, Locher and Black Cart, also pass through 3 places associated with the Johnstone Radical and Chartist John Fraser, who taught in Kilmacolm and is buried in Kilbarchan

Enjoyed listening to @dhothersall.bsky.social on BBC radio Scotland this morning, while driving to work, talked sense and politics aside, he also used one of my favourite expressions - ‘That’s for the birds’ 😊

Today’s morning prayer is from an old Ashton Gourock Prayer Book, from its time as a United Free Church (1900-1929) Have a safe & peaceful week ahead ‘Awake my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise, To pay thy morning sacrifice’

A reflection on The Odyssey - In his Easy Essays, Catholic Worker founder Peter Maurin wrote that the ancient Greeks understood the duty of hospitality, those in need represent the divine. Maurin believed that the poor are ‘God's ambassadors’ and deserve to be given food shelter

We need all our Scottish churches on this list asap!!!! We must be on the right side of history here, and most importantly we must live out the gospels and give witness to Jesus of Nazareth

Gave the old Mongoose a run out this morning, I’ve not been out on this since I got the Elops, which is the best single speed bike I’ve owned. Mongoose brought out this single speed commuter bike a few years back. It’s not too bad.

There’s been a lot of mad stuff in this World Cup, like when the teams were coming out the tunnel onto the pitch the other night and Guy Mowbray says - “If England can get through tonight, then one or two of these players won’t have to wait too long for a sword on the shoulders” 😂

Pre-season ‘football-free’ Saturday afternoon part II… We’ve visited two different Antiques shops today! But lunch was good, there’s a tiny noodle cafe in West Kilbride, the Char Sui ramen is fantastic.

The crisis is urgent. We know that we can do little, but we must resolve to do all. If we are afraid, we must pray not to be afraid, to be fools for Christ. Love includes justice. Dorothy Day

My oldest bought me this today ❤️ The Bronze Age of Batman is the best period of comics imo. Mostly written by Denny O’Neil and illustrated by great artists like Neal Adams and Dick Giordano. I loved these stories as a kid, Batman is mostly working on his own as a detective

That’s the football season officially over, so instead of going to a game this Saturday, I’m proper buzzing for the Skelmorlie Scouts Village Jumble sale, followed by the Old Gourock Family Fun Day. In the words of the Pointer Sisters - ‘I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it’

In recent years, there’s been very little which I’d agree with Maurice on, least of all his misguided support for Trump and friendship with Vance but he’s correct here, the decline of the Labour & Trade Union movement has all sorts of cultural consequences, as well as economic ones

These two match day programmes are from season 90-91 games me and my Dad and my cousin went to at the old Upton Park when Billy Bonds was the manager and West Ham were relegated to the old 2nd division. Relegation won’t be too bad, the fans will always be there. Up The Hammers!

Can’t be doing with all this performative grandstanding and all these worthy statements. They are worthless and meaningless. Either take the oath or don’t take your seat on point of principle. Since 1918, Sinn Féin have refused to take the oath of allegiance or take their seats

During elections in France, French Socialists wore nose-pegs to the polling stations to show their frustration at having to vote for President Chirac to ensure that he defeated the right-winger Le Pen. Today, hold your nose and tactically vote to keep Reform out of our community

I actually think the life peers in the House of Lords, drawn from the business class, such as Michelle Mone and Malcolm Offord etc…are all far worse than the last of the hereditary peers drawn from the old gentry.
