Absolutely phenomenal film, local school children should be taken to see this movie honouring the memory of the Free French and the greatest ever Frenchman to ever set foot here in Greenock.

Abbot Bunche was killed alongside his King at the battle of Flodden Field and Scotland, the Scottish Church and the great Kilwinning Abbey never really recovered from this catastrophe.

On this day in 1513 on the 22nd August, Abbot William Bunche of Kilwinning Abbey, crossed into England with King James IV of Scotland, who led the massive army across the River Tweed ahead of the disastrous Battle of Flodden.

Smashing ride from Ardrossan to Saltcoats, up through the sand dunes at Stevenson, Ardeer nature reserve, then through the open countryside to Kilwinning, to watch a great game at Buffs Park on a very auspicious day for Kilwinning.

Seeing lots of new plans for securing Indy, not heard much about covenants. I admire the popular sovereignty and democratic governance found in Scots covenanting political theory. I feel that covenants have a role to play in this constitutional crisis. Unsure what that role is @douggay.bsky.social ?

However, maybe not, as Fraser wasn’t keen on riots, he sought a well organised insurrection but he and Allan were possibly involved in helping the radicals they broke out of Greenock jail, to escape.

Ross Ahlfeld @rossahlfeld.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
Fraser would have also spent time in Kilbarchan organising with the weaver poet and fellow 1820 Radical Robert Allan. There’s a possibility that both Allan and Fraser were present at the Greenock massacre in 1820 records suggest agitators from Johnstone and Kibarchan were present

I cycled from Kilmacolm to Johnstone today to watch Johnstone Burgh v Albion Rovers. I crossed 3 rivers - Gryffe, Locher and Black Cart, also pass through 3 places associated with the Johnstone Radical and Chartist John Fraser, who taught in Kilmacolm and is buried in Kilbarchan

Enjoyed listening to @dhothersall.bsky.social on BBC radio Scotland this morning, while driving to work, talked sense and politics aside, he also used one of my favourite expressions - ‘That’s for the birds’ 😊

Today’s morning prayer is from an old Ashton Gourock Prayer Book, from its time as a United Free Church (1900-1929) Have a safe & peaceful week ahead ‘Awake my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise, To pay thy morning sacrifice’

Ross Ahlfeld @rossahlfeld.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
An easier way to understand this is to pause at the Homeless Jesus in Glasgow and quietly share & offer, what you can, where you are, whenever the opportunity presents itself. “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares”.

Ross Ahlfeld @rossahlfeld.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
To Dorothy, "entertaining angels" meant seeing Christ in Disguise. This idea is present throughout the entire film - In killing the priestess of the temple in Troy they kill Athena herself. They consistently break Zeus’s law. The beggar is the hidden King of Ithaca

Ross Ahlfeld @rossahlfeld.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Dorothy Day took this further saying - every person in need must be treated with the same reverence and dignity as a visiting angel or Jesus Christ himself. This idea comes from the Hebrews 13:2: ‘Entertaining Angels’ - For Dorothy, this wasn’t a metaphor but a command for life

A reflection on The Odyssey - In his Easy Essays, Catholic Worker founder Peter Maurin wrote that the ancient Greeks understood the duty of hospitality, those in need represent the divine. Maurin believed that the poor are ‘God's ambassadors’ and deserve to be given food shelter

We need all our Scottish churches on this list asap!!!! We must be on the right side of history here, and most importantly we must live out the gospels and give witness to Jesus of Nazareth

Gave the old Mongoose a run out this morning, I’ve not been out on this since I got the Elops, which is the best single speed bike I’ve owned. Mongoose brought out this single speed commuter bike a few years back. It’s not too bad.

There’s been a lot of mad stuff in this World Cup, like when the teams were coming out the tunnel onto the pitch the other night and Guy Mowbray says - “If England can get through tonight, then one or two of these players won’t have to wait too long for a sword on the shoulders” 😂
