Looking Back on Newtype USA 15 Years Later: Anime historian Red Bard traces the history and impact of Newtype USA, which ran from 2002 to 2008. They look at the features the magazine put forth, the circumstances behind its rise and fall, and its impact on North American anime fandom, as a whole.

Looking Back on Newtype USA 15 Years Later

Once upon a time (or, before internet access was as accessible as it is today) anime magazines played a key role in keeping anime fans plugged in to what was going on in the anime industry. Bigger, bolder, and glossier than its competition, Newtype USA was easily among the most popular anime publications in the west before suddenly going out of print in 2008.

Same goes for cosplay or any other fan work imo You'll gain a LOT more appreciation for the work people put into their fandoms if you try it yourself! I don't personally read fanfic but this applies to so much. We're making fandom for free at best, paying money to do it at worst

I know everything is on fire but PLEASE contact your representatives about the selloff of public lands. It's a heartbreaking proposal that will destroy the soul of America.

grist.org

Your favorite campgrounds, hiking trails, and forests could soon be up for auction

Republicans want to make 250 million acres of public lands eligible for sale to housing developers.

There is so much history and every day I learn more of it (from Play, Volume 1, Issue 10, October 2002, p.17)

To hype the remarkable Mario Sunshine, Nintendo broke the world record of horrifically large pasta dishes, cooking up 3,265 pounds of spaghetti, surpassing the old Guinness achievement of 2,564. Fans got to jump into the three-foot high, ten-foot-wide pan to collect prizes.

An action shot of a man dressed like Luigi getting drenched with a faceful of spaghetti. He's holding some kind of Gamecube swag bag.

She drew it again at school XD, compete with a container of "blud" but she said it's permanent blood so it doesn't run out so Audrey II doesn't have to eat people. Oh and the C T stand for "canned tuna"

A 6 year old's pencil drawing of a happy plant smiling and it's pot is a tuna can with a capital C and T on it and a little fish drawing, too. Next to the plant in the can is a cylinder with a lid on it with the face of the smiling plant and on the bottom in small letters it says "blud".

Told the girls a rough summary of the plot of Little Shop Of Horrors last night and showed them a couple clips, and then the 6yo immediately drew little Audrey II but in a tuna can cause she felt a tuna can was cuter than a coffee can xD

update i can't make to this story because polygon laid me off: a judge decided john gioeli can sue over ownership rights to the musical composition "live and learn," but *not* ownership of the sound recording. several other claims dismissed, too. www.polygon.com/news/498953/...
