It was not until 2023 that the US Army started developing a ground launcher for Tomahawks, which up to that point could be launched only from ships. Biden announced on 7/10/2024 that the Typhon ground launcher would be deployed in Germany starting in *2026.* So no, that would have been impossible.

Until we understand what it means that russia is waging a Vernichtungskrieg—a war of extermination—in Ukraine, not only will we have failed to grasp the essence of russia’s war and its strategy today and tomorrow, but we Europeans will remain unable to make the necessary decision.

Agree that democracy is a central problem while at the same time agreeing with what @paultlevin.bsky.social says abt it. I've spent the last 20y reading peer-reviewed papers on personality types that are easily propagandized & am afraid that we analytical thinkers are way outnumbered by the others.

Indeed, democracy is the worst. Except for all the other systems that have been tried. I would also add that whatever we may be doing is clearly not enough.

"Absalom, Absalom!" is not only the better of the 2, I think it's his best novel. "As I Lay Dying" is also excellent (Vardaman: "My mother is a fish"). "The Sound and the Fury" wd have been much better had Faulkner subjectivized Dilsey in ch.4, but Benjy's chapter is masterful. TSatF is terrifying.

I so enjoyed this article, Evan. I tend to look at everything from the perspective of history. Every moment is full of possibilities. Those possibilities are not endless, though. If her 4-year-old daughter hadn't inadvertently activated P01, the Apollo 8 mission may have turned out very differently.

How many times have I watched him walk up those stairs, and every time he pauses after the first flight — to wait for you? I've mentioned this phenomenon before in your comments; it's what I call "following from in front." Dogs will also do this whenever they're walking in front of you in the house.

Russia has always tried to erase Ukrainian culture, and Ukrainian words have been one of its primary targets. What are contained within these Ukrainian words? A beautiful and varied culture, a culture of literature, poetry, art, science, history, philosophy, theology, a culture above all, of life.

I've long been curious if anyone who's read Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" has noticed that Trump is Thomas Sutpen who, as a child, was forced to enter a great house through the back w the servants and never forgot the humiliation. Public allegations about the "mistreatment" of [fill-in-the-blank] speakers is an old imperialist trick known to all serious students of history, the earliest example of which I'm aware is from the mid 19th-c. Everyone at the time understood its meaning: It was a claim to someone else's land.
