"To see how you'd react." I don't think we, as a society, have sufficiently grappled with how underdeveloped tons of people are, how so much cruelty comes down to infant-like probing at other people like they're barely fascinating stimuli sources. slate.com/life/2026/10...
therapists before I found one who was a good fit for me. The very first therapist I ever met gasped, brought her hands to her mouth, and looked on with horror when I described how, when I was 8 years old, my mother pretended to give away the family cat while I was at school. When I came home after school, she watched me walk from room to room as I called out for my pet. When she didn’t appear, my mother told me that she had given her away. This was about two years after my parents gave away our family dog, also while I was at school, and also without warning.

I remember breaking down into sobs as I flung myself to the living room floor, my face buried in my tiny fists. And when I felt something furry against my arm, I realized it was all a ruse. My cat was alive and well and still at home with us. When I asked my mother why she had done this, she simply said, “To see how you’d react.” It would be nearly 40 years before I allowed myself to bond with another cat, and another decade before I attempted therapy again.

Screenshot of the top of a National Geographic piece. Reads: Listening to birds sing really does soothe your brain. Here's why.

Spending time in nature is important for your mental health. But studies show that even just listening to birds singing can ease symptoms of anxiety and depression.Different NatGeo piece, with a photograph of a man working with a wheelbarrow in an urban green space.

One unexpected way to reduce violent crime?
Create green spaces.
Cleaning up abandoned lots and creating community gardens doesn't just make a neighborhood feel safer
-a growing body of evidence shows they really become safer.

Transforming neighborhood blight
A review of 45 papers found that the presence of green spaces, including parks and trees, reduces crime in urban areas. In Philadelphia, researchers found an association between planting grass and trees and gun assaults.
And in Flint, Zimmerman and his colleagues compared streets where community members maintained vacant lots through Clean & Green with streets where vacant lots were left alone, over five years. The maintained ones had almost 40 percent fewer assaults and violent crimes. Another study showed that segments of neighborhoods with maintained lawns had lower rates of child maltreatment.
