Okayama Castle, Japan. Photography by Tashi Delek
Framed beneath a dense, web-like arbor of bare winter branches, the dark silhouette of Okayama Castle (Okayama-jō) looms against a brooding, sage-tinted twilight sky. The multi-tiered main keep (tenshu) anchors the lower register of the composition, its black clapboard walls and sweeping gables steeped in deep shadow. From below, an intricate network of fine twigs stretches upward like liquid calligraphic ink, vein-like fissures etching across the subdued atmospheric backdrop. The diffused, low-intensity light filters gently through the barren canopy, highlighting the quiet geometry of the fortress rooflines while immersing the surrounding woodland in cool, monochromatic dusk.

Photographed by Tashi Delek, this evocative perspective captures one of Japan’s most architecturally distinct feudal strongholds. Completed in 1597 by Daimyō Ukita Hideie—a prominent commander under Toyotomi Hideyoshi—Okayama Castle earned the enduring moniker U-jō ("Crow Castle") due to its striking, black-lacquered wooden siding.
Aesthetically, the image relies on miegakure (the design principle of hide-and-reveal), where the intricate lattice of bare branches partially screens the castle keep, inviting the eye to discover the fortress through an organic curtain. The brooding tones of the dark facade set against twilight mirror the core tenets of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's in'ei raisan (praise of shadows), finding majestic resonance not in harsh illumination, but in the subdued depth of twilight shadows. The interlaced boughs form a natural, atmospheric kekkai (protective boundary), isolating the castle within a sanctuary of deep seijaku (tranquil quietude).

The swallow pattern on this mid-20th century kimono, rendered in cream against a deep blue ground, exemplifies the Japanese principle of negative space composition, where the birds appear to emerge from and dissolve back into the textured background in a dynamic dance of form and void.
The highly textured fabric surface creates an almost pointillistic effect that recalls both traditional Japanese textile techniques like shibori and the experimental surface treatments explored by modernist designers of the period.

The swallow motif carries profound symbolic resonance in Japanese culture, representing loyalty, good fortune, and the promise of return. Swallows are also harbingers of spring and summer, making them especially appropriate for a lightweight summer kimono. The birds' graceful, sweeping forms distributed across the textile create a sense of movement and freedom that contrasts beautifully with the structured geometry of the kimono's construction.

Aesthetically, the design reflects the influence of Art Deco and early modernist movements in its bold contrast, stylized natural forms, and emphasis on pattern as surface decoration rather than representational imagery. The use of rayon, a relatively new synthetic fiber during this period, speaks to Japan's embrace of industrial innovation while maintaining traditional craft sensibilities. The textile's textured surface, visible in the detail images, creates a tactile quality that adds depth and visual interest, transforming what might have been a simple two-color design into something far more complex and engaging. This piece represents a perfect synthesis of traditional Japanese aesthetics with the material and stylistic innovations of the modern era.

Photographed by Hideyuki Kamon during Kyoto’s annual Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages), the scene captures one of Japan’s most celebrated living historical pageants.
Viewed from behind as he moves along the procession route, a mounted warrior presents a striking study in medieval martial splendor. His helmet (kabuto) features a multi-plate riveted bowl (suji-bachi) crowned by a cascading neck guard (shikoro) laced with radiant vermilion silk (aka-odoshi). Across his back, individual iron and lacquered scales (kozane) are bound with intricate silk cords, framed by stenciled leather shoulder straps adorned with dyed motifs. Slung horizontally across his lower waist, a woven bamboo quiver (ebira) holds a cluster of fletched arrows (ya), while his gloved hand firmly grips the slender shaft of a bow, its vertical line rising straight into the frame against a soft backdrop of pine foliage and temple rooflines.

Established in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyō and the dedication of Heian Shrine, the October procession features over two thousand participants dressed in meticulously recreated attire spanning a millennium of capital history. The armor depicted—the classical ō-yoroi ("great armor")—was designed between the 10th and 14th centuries specifically for elite samurai engaged in mounted archery (yabusame). Every piece in the parade reflects an extraordinary commitment to monozukuri (master craftsmanship), preserving traditional methods of metalwork, lacquer application, silk weaving, and leather stenciling.
