The middle is getting eaten alive in third-party D&D design. There are still lots of people self-publishing and making basically no money, and there are still opportunities for top freelancers, but it's getting harder and harder to move from the first group to the second.

So. This is what separates a good translator from a mediocre one. A mediocre translator looks at the word. Then translates the word. They have no knowledge of context beyond the word. A good translator knows that words carry information. The word itself is not important. What is important is (1)

After months of hard work and many evenings giggling as I turned wacky kobold prompts into stat blocks, I'm thrilled to announce that version 1.0 is ready! If you got it on Itch, you can download the new version from the Itch page. If you got it on Backerkit, a download email should go out soon. 🧵

Illustration of a purple-scaled kobold with glowing red eyes, psionically projecting a glowing red shield and several glowing red javelins. Above them it says "Kobold Ancestry". In the bottom left corner, it says "Powered by Draw Steel".

Pencil sketch of two tree frogs crouching. The one on the right, forward a bit, is in a breastplate and is proudly raising a sword to the sky, with his other hand in a fist at his chest. The one in the back on the left is in typical bard attire with a puffy-shouldered shirt and playing a lute that says “Epifrog” on the headstock. The bard is wearing a little crown.

Real Talk: I’ve been playing some form of D&D/ttrpg for a little over 20 years, and combat was NEVER my favorite part. I’m often a little checked out when waiting for it to be my turn. Doodling, checking sms, etc. Even in BG3 — which I LOVE — it feels real bad to miss when you use a level 6 spell.
