A late Roman ridge helmet, dating back to the mid-4th century AD. The nasal guard and cheekpieces are missing. Gilded helmets were typically worn by high-ranking officers. Found in Augsburg, on display at the Römerlager im Zeughaus in Augsburg. 📷 me 🏺

XXL transport containers: Two huge #Roman wooden barrels in an outstanding state of preservation, found in Xanten. Both had a capacity of approx. 1250 l and were used to transport #wine from the Mediterranean region to the Lower Rhine. They were recycled for lining wells.🧵1/2 📷me 🏺 #archaeology
The photograph, taken within a museum setting, depicts two remarkably well-preserved Roman barrels of substantial size. They appear largely complete, with the exception of their upper sections.

Where was ink usually kept in the #Roman world? #Inkwells The most common inkwells were the Samian ones (pottery), being the cheaper option than their metal counterparts. Roman writers made use of two colours: red for headings, and black for the rest of the text.

It is with great sadness that the Roman Society has learned of the death of Professor Dame Averil Cameron, DBE, FBA, FSA. Professor of Ancient History (1978-89) and of Late Antique and Byzantine History (1989-1994) at King's College London, and then Warden of Keble College, Oxford (1994-2010).

#FindsFriday! For this week’s treasure, CFA Archaeology is excited to share a wonderful Roman brooch recovered from excavations in West Yorkshire. The upper face of this disc brooch was decorated with 10 circles (of which 4 remain) evenly spaced around a central raised circle.

Roman bracelets adapted into rings, like this example, are commonly seen in later 4th-mid-5th centuries AD with some examples from Saxon cemeteries. The number of examples recorded by the PAS suggests using one terminal end of the bracelet is common. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/database/art...

This rare bronze purse was found with six #gold coins still inside in the #Celtic oppidum (settlement) at Manching. It was originally sealed with an organic material, presumably a leather strap. The purse is rather small: 4.3x3.3 cm. The diameter of the smallest coin is 6.5 mm.🧵1/2 📷 me 🏺

The oppidum (or possibly huge hillfort) of Stanwick was a major #IronAge centre of the Brigantes. One of Britain's largest metalwork deposits was found nearby, indicating wealth comparable to mainland European societies. A sort of #HillfortsWednesday 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 🏺 #Archaeology

A #Roman military diploma issued in AD 71 to Marcus Syrus when he left the military after 26 years of service with the marines. He was originally from Jerash (Jordan) but settled in Pompeii in retirement, where he stored his diploma in his bedside alcove

#TrimontiumTuesday 🏛️ Roman military diploma plates recorded the discharge of auxiliary soldiers, granting citizenship after service. This example names Longinus Festius of Cohors I Hamiorum Sagittariorum, a Syrian archer unit in Britain. #Syrian archers served at #Trimontium—perhaps he did too.
