I'm lucky enough to work in the same place as my favourite ever Roman artefact, this adorable sausage owl. Small but mighty, I often open his box in the store to say hi. But now I've been allowed to put him on display (!), so all the world (all visitors to Falkirk) can appreciate him.
A small sausage of clay with the features of an owl roughly but adorably squidged into it and baked. From Camelon, second century AD.

I love my job. I might be a Roman archaeologist, but my focus is craft, industry and tools, and the opportunity to also work with modern collections and a social history rapidly falling into memory is a proper privilege. Also look at this massive drill used in shipbuilding!

I routinely see kids products that come in the 2 options "Dinosaur" or "Unicorn"- which apart from the obvious, annoys me because one gets science and one gets mythology. This could easily be fixed by swapping dinosaurs with dragons, or, hear me out, aggressively marketing Cambrian sea life to girls

Love this 1950s advert for Carron Co. '490 dead! Buy our winches.'

We have lots of student notebooks containing sketches on anatomy, diseases etc, however, this one is by far our favourite. It shows Joseph Lister, father of antiseptic surgery, disappearing through a trapdoor after his lecture in Glasgow in 1868. Now that's how to make an exit! #Museum30 #Sketchbook
