A new round of DARG date sessions starts today: 40th year running. In the old days we used to cram into a rather shabby teaching room; but it had chairs and a table, and gave us the space away from admin and teaching. An hour poring over tapes and transcripts amongst like-minded folk - marvellous.
an image taken from Loughborough University website describing the DARG data sessions. It reads, in part, "the discourse and rhetoric group has been running data sessions every Wednesday from 13:00 - 14:00 during university time since 1987. Since the pandemic, all sessions are also online…"

A thoughtful and well-evidenced critique of the Packalen & Bhattacharya paper claiming that (US-) funded research is increasingly old hat (prompting yet more goverment intervention; Bhattacharya is Director of the US National Institutes of Health). Problems with questionable coding and analysis.

"First we prepared the set of cards. One set of made up of abstract of an academic paper that a certain phenomenon; the other set was made of matching short clips from a movie or TV show which feature the salient (we hoped) instance of those phenomenon. The cars were mixed up and placed face down on the floor.
What a card with the number was uncovered we played the corresponding clip to the players; if it was an abstract, the players read it and discussed it. Then the card was placed face down again and as the game went on and the players had got an idea of where the cards were, they had to pay them up."

Fascinating to hear that people use 300 words per day fewer between 2005 & 2019. But it doesn't quite mean that we've lost 300 x 365 days x 14 years = 1.5 million words each. (!) Not if it's the same 300 words.
Clip from Pfeifer & Mehl 2026:
… The participants arranging an age from 10 to 94, were part of 22 studies conducted over the span of 14 years and resided mostly in the United States as well as Mexico Australia and Europe. The report yield an estimate for the average number of spoken words per day at 12,792 an estimate noticeably lower than normal prior study from 2007 yield it using the same method… bar relate in the aspens of participants daily spoken words to the year that it was collected we discovered that for each year between 2005 and 2019 an average of 338 fewer words be spoken per day… At first glance 300 also words seem like a small insignificant l but as tribute 338 were today may feel the loss of these daily spoken words unavoidably adds up.
