There are many stories about AI and 'conversational' products, but this one in particular (about the recording and analysis of probate calls in Co-op Legal Services) had many disappointing, frustrating, and worrying components - from the perspective of conversation analytic research #EMCA. 🧵 1/8

Whistleblower says recording and analysis of all probate calls in Co-op Legal Services is oppressive

Generative AI is, perhaps inevitably, beginning to feature in some submissions to the journal. For the sake of transparency, and in fairness to all, we now require submissions to include a mandatory declaration of its use (or non-use). www.tandfonline.com/action/autho...
Mandatory AI Declaration
Research on Language and Social Interaction generally deprecates the use of generative AI in submissions.

If generative AI has been used, authors must provide a Declaration, detailing the scope and extent of the AI usage. In some cases, the editors may return the submission and require three copies of the submission to be provided:

A copy before any generative AI was introduced into the text
A copy showing, and marking, generative AI-produced text
A fair copy to be considered for review
If no generative AI has been used, The Declaration should read “No generative AI has been used in the preparation or writing of this article”.

Sally Wiggins's @profsalwiggins.bsky.social new book on children's mealtimes looks terrific. Expert use of discursive psychology and CA to make sense of events that sometimes look a bit chaotic. The price (currently!) is reasonably affordable for an academic book. www.routledge.com/Researching-...
"Using video-recorded examples from family homes and preschool environments, it illustrates how ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, discursive psychology, and language socialisation can uncover the intricate interplay of food, language, and social behaviour. From infants’ first experiences with milk feeding to children's evolving food preferences, the book examines key topics such as weaning, sensory tasting, food likes and dislikes, hunger and satiety, and food refusals. Each chapter combines theoretical insights with practical guidance, offering a rich synthesis of literature reviews, data examples, and suggestions for future research. The book equips readers with the analytical tools to study children’s eating practices and inspires interdisciplinary collaboration by bridging anthropology, psychology, linguistics, and sociology.

With its accessible yet rigorous approach, Researching Children’s Mealtimes is an essential resource for researchers and students across the social sciences. Whether you are a novice researcher or an experienced scholar, this book offers a unique contribution to the study of children’s eating practices and a vital tool for advancing research in this field. "

A new round of DARG date sessions starts today: 40th year running. In the old days we used to cram into a rather shabby teaching room; but it had chairs and a table, and gave us the space away from admin and teaching. An hour poring over tapes and transcripts amongst like-minded folk - marvellous.
an image taken from Loughborough University website describing the DARG data sessions. It reads, in part, "the discourse and rhetoric group has been running data sessions every Wednesday from 13:00 - 14:00 during university time since 1987. Since the pandemic, all sessions are also online…"

Fascinating to hear that people use 300 words per day fewer between 2005 & 2019. But it doesn't quite mean that we've lost 300 x 365 days x 14 years = 1.5 million words each. (!) Not if it's the same 300 words.
Clip from Pfeifer & Mehl 2026:
… The participants arranging an age from 10 to 94, were part of 22 studies conducted over the span of 14 years and resided mostly in the United States as well as Mexico Australia and Europe. The report yield an estimate for the average number of spoken words per day at 12,792 an estimate noticeably lower than normal prior study from 2007 yield it using the same method… bar relate in the aspens of participants daily spoken words to the year that it was collected we discovered that for each year between 2005 and 2019 an average of 338 fewer words be spoken per day… At first glance 300 also words seem like a small insignificant l but as tribute 338 were today may feel the loss of these daily spoken words unavoidably adds up.
