So as someone who is both an educator and has introduced numerous new people to the hobby over the years, definitely some interesting thoughts here. IMO, the answers are complex. As always I feel the best way to introduce new people to gaming or to a new game for them, offer to run it.

I think the #ttrpg scene could use more #pbta games that are built for duet play, at the very least as training tools for GMs in the framework. Learn 'the conversation' in a one-on-one setting, where you don't have the ghosts of mechanical balance and action economy hanging around.

There's an rpg design exercise I taught myself to do many years ago, and it's never failed me. How it works is, you take an rpg rule and sort out, in all its components, which are real and which are fictional. The nearest rpg book to me right now is Paul Czege's forthcoming Balsam Lake Unmurders.
