A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

3 years ago I wrote this piece for @theatlantic.com about why we mustn’t take public health for granted. This is long before this admin’s deep cuts to public health. With the massive Cyclospora outbreak, I couldn’t help thinking about my own warning from the past.

Thousands of biomedical studies are stuck in limbo as NIH drags out renewals months after annual budgets expire. Since 2025, the rate of overdue renewals has TRIPLED. This leaves scientists unable to plan, keep staff employed, or maintain long-term research. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... #NIH 🧪

For #WorldPolioDay, @asm.org named the University of Pittsburgh a Milestones in Microbiology site to honor Dr. Jonas Salk for developing the world’s first polio vaccine. After use in the early 1950s, it reduced paralytic polio in the U.S. by 96% in only a few years.
This Pittsburgher was 12 years old when he became one of the first children to receive the Salk inactivated polio vaccine in 1952. Dr. Peter Salk, the eldest son of Dr. Jonas Salk, spoke about his father’s research to develop an inactivated polio vaccine. The slide shows images of his father and the scene on the day the vaccine was approved. Unveiling of the ASM plaque to honor the University of Pittsburgh as a Milestones in Microbiology site on World Polio Day. Shown are (L to R): Dr. Paul Duprex, Director of the Pitt Center for Vaccine Research; Dr. Donald Burke, former Dean of the Pitt School of Public Health; Dr. Vaughn Cooper, President-Elect of ASM; Colleen Puterbaugh, ASM Archivist; Dr. Peter Salk, son of Dr. Jonas Salk; Dr. Maureen Lichtveld, Dean of the Pitt School of Public Health; and one of the first people to receive the Salk vaccine in 1952.

A discovery doesn't usually happen as a single moment but in 3 phases: 1. Observing the results from experiments & analyses, 2. Realizing the big story when writing up the paper, 3. Understanding what's truly new about the work when presenting to friends, reviewers & audiences.

As of today, at least 73 study sections have not met. If they review 50 applications, plus 30 triaged, 10% funding rate = 8 grants per SS. That's 584 fundable grants on hold. Probably 5000 researchers affected in those teams composed of our best and brightest. SABOTAGE.

NIH freeze by the numbers, and the conclusion is correct. This is sabotage, and we are quickly reaching a point where even if everything were to open back up today, it would be too late to save many labs.
