I’m excited to finally see this collaboration with @postcolsandwich.bsky.social in print in this Plant Humanities volume! We researched and wrote our dissertations together, and we’re sharing space with writers I admire like Sumana Roy, Judith Carney, Romita Ray, Gary Paul Nahban, and Yota Batsaki.

I’m excited to go to Boston this week for a symposium on Monocultures at Tufts University. We mustn’t forget that there are more plantations today than ever before, and they continue to harm, people, places, and our planet.

What a way to start Black History Month!! It was so cool to finally meet Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery in person and host her at UMD to discuss her book When Tree Testify. It was extra special that she cited my work in the book and included a whole slide in her presentation to explain why!

Last Friday, I gathered environmental justice educators from across the University of Maryland system for an EJ Pedagogy Workshop, where we shared syllabi, best practices, assignments, and thoughts on how we help students navigate climate and eco anxiety. It was an incredible experience!

These new books look great. I write a lot on arsenic and would love to eventually teach a course on the social and political history of elements.

“People of African descent played critical roles in Guerrero and the rest of New Spain as plantation laborers, mine workers, coastal militiamen, and arrieros. As a common pathway for formerly enslaved afrodescendientes, arrieros were also connected to emancipation and social mobility.”

“Globally and historically, most mules respond to calls from arrieros. As of 2021, over half of the world’s mules lived in Spanish America, with a third calling Mexico home. How this happened has everything to do with the Spanish empire, slavery, and racial capitalism.”

Unfortunately, this wasn’t my first toxic tour, and it likely won’t be my last. But it was an affirming tour for me with the People’s Port Authority and environmental justice leader, Monica Huertas, and civil rights leader, Ashanti Alston. I’m grateful for their time and courage and example.

In Winona, MS for a Fannie Lou Hamer and Emmett Till Tour. This is the old train depot where Till got off in 1955. He got round trip tickets from Chicago to Winona but, as to know, he never got back on. Never got home.

They have some big trees at Stanford. I’m not sure if these are redwoods, but the eucalyptus trees in the arboretum are huge and numerous. I didn’t know they got so large.

Joy for days! I was so happy and honored to give a lecture and workshop research in the @tru-uoft.bsky.social. Meeting and engaging with Dr. Murphy was as joyous as it was intellectually generative. Toronto owes me not a single thing. Thank you dearly for the invitation.

I learned how to brush my teeth with branches from cotton plants in rural Senegal this week, and it makes me wonder if my ancestors in Alabama also knew how to use the cotton plant for dental hygiene.

We’re actively terraforming our world with plastic. Goats and cows graze in fields of it. Blades of bags and wrappers even sway in the wind like grass. Plastic disposal is a crisis across the global countryside. I took these photos in Joal, Senegal yesterday, but this could be anywhere.
