In 1974, fans wrote letters responding to an advertisement in a Marvel comic, threatening to stop reading Marvel if it continued. Roy Thomas raised the issue with Stan Lee, and, according to an internal office memo involving then-president Al Landau, no more ads of its like were used.

I'm seeing reports on Facebook that pulp and comics historian Will Murray passed away on Monday. In comics he's best known for having created (along with Steve Ditko) Marvel's Squirrel Girl.

Just got the new English-language boxed set of Enrique Breccia hardcovers from Epicenter Comics. I’ve been wanting to read these stories for a decade, and now I finally can. There is no one in comics who can fill a landscape panel with mystery and poetry like Breccia.

Spoke with him a few times over the phone and via email and always enjoyed talking with him. Gone way too soon.

you are not ready for the big reveal of the first name in the letters column hiding under this Don Rosa cover
Donald Duck Adventures #16, cover by Don Rosa.Dear Editor,
That's it, that's absolutely it! Your Donald Duck Adventures #12 is the last straw! You made me write you; I didn't wanna do it, I didn't wanna...
I've admitted in a couple of interviews to being another Carl Barks fan. Was raised on Barks. Had a complete run of DD, US, C&s from 49-57, when my folks threw them out!!! I know, don't rub it in.
The other artists' Duck stories simply never quite made it for me.
Something missing (a cutting edge?).
Still, I get most of your issues. Like many others, I've noticed that the covers by Daan Jippes are up there with Walt Kelly and Barks. First rate.
Ditto the publication and editorial quality. And now along comes Don Rosa. I "ducked" initially, and got
"The Son of the Sun" two months late, but...
Whoops! What was this? Another duck artist with rapier wit, rapier intelligence? Yup. Great puns. Theatrical and surprising by turns. Dense with generous detail, verbal and pic-torial. More than you can grasp in several readings. I love to do that in my music; here's someone as obsessive in another field. Neat. I was tempted to write. (But I was strong.)
Hmm... began looking forward to the next Rosa, and the next.
Definitely a new eye and look here, no slavish attempt to mimic Barks, just keep to the same spirit/stan-dards. Possibly even sharper-edged (like Rosa's Glomgold). Very wel-comed, very healthy.
At the end of 1987 I was thrilled to get your reprint of "Lost in the Andes." Barks will always be the best of the best, and this story started my lost childhood collec-tion. This week you gave us Rosa's
"Return to Plain Awful." Perfect.
Some will call it derivative (get that a lot, too, but I call it Great!! And it makes me feel indeed lucky to have Barks for the first half of my life, and now Rosa for the rest.

Fun thread about the obvious charms and equally obvious flaws of Crisis on Infinite Earths. I especially appreciate this bit:
All the stuff paved over by Crisis - whose effects, like the future, were unevenly distributed - suddenly became the repressed memories of a universe in denial. Bat-Mite and Prez, let alone Supergirl, acquired the sexy cachet of the forbidden (something British writers made considerable bank from)
