To be clear: I don’t give a *damn* for the collapse of assessments. If one outcome of this is abolition of grades, I’d be thrilled. The problem with the mountainous pressure on students to cheat isn’t their grades; it’s the loss of the whole enterprise. AI is stealing from all of us.

On this day in 1846, the Franklin Expedition's Terror and Erebus became trapped in the ice off King William Island. The ships were rediscovered in 2014 and 2016. 📸 John Edward Davis Learn more in my Deep Dive 👇 buff.ly/NURsmSV
A historical watercolor painting depicts two ships, the Erebus and Terror, trapped in a dense pack of ice under a pale blue sky. The ships, with tall masts and tattered sails, are tilted slightly as they are surrounded by jagged ice floes, their hulls partially obscured by the icy waters. The scene is rendered in soft shades of blue, gray, and white, with delicate brushstrokes capturing the harsh Arctic environment. The text at the bottom reads "The Erebus & Terror in a gale in the pack of the ice Jan^y 1842," indicating the date and context of the perilous expedition, with faint outlines of distant ice formations adding depth to the composition.

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

I cannot overemphasize how important this is regarding close reading as teaching and learning.
In our work, we assumed - before anything else, before any evidence - that there was meaning, and that we were rational, and we decided that we treat texts, ourselves, and each other this way.

During the Second World War, the Imperial War Graves Commission pulped most of the letters families sent 1917-1930s. That makes the letters in the Canadian archives (LAC) all the more remarkable. This sketch shows comrades cooperating to help find a man who was killed at Passchendaele in 1917:
detailed pencil sketch of a gravesite showing the location of a grave and nearby landmarks like pillboxes, woods, ridges
Part of the typed letter visible:
Captain Muirhead was shot through the chest and when I last saw him he was lying partially buried in a large shell hole about 15 yards to the rear and to the left of a pill box we were attacking. I am fairly certain that this pill box is the one shown on my map at D.4.b.1 and the grave would be approximately D.4.b.1.2 just to the North of Wolfe Copse. From memory the immediate area was something like this:
[sketch]
The whole area was a sea of mud at the time so that the only landmarks were the pill boxes and the bits of woods. It took us three days to evacuate our wounded from the front line area, then we were relieved and went back to Ypres so I am not in a position to state how much wok the burial parties accomplished later.

Working on an A.I. policy for my calculus classes. Decided to be upfront about the current situation with LLMs and to give a heartfelt explanation for why the course still matters.
Al policy

Context

Artificial Intelligence, or "A.l.," Is a broad term used to refer to several different kinds of technologies. The kind most relevant to this class are Large Language Models (LLMs), which use mathematics to analyze large amounts of human-produced text and then generate new text that simulates what a human might write in response to prompts or questions. Some examples of LLMs are OpenAl's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini.Current LLMs can provide a solution to any calculus problem I give you. So why should we work on them, you might ask? Here's the thing: for the most part, the problems were already solved anyway. Calculus as a subject is nearly 400 years old. It has reached into virtually every modern scientific and economic field. And while I would like to believe that I have crafted a few new problems with some small amount of originality tailored to this class, for the most part I have curated a collection of exercises drawn from my years of teaching calculus. Those exercises come from textbooks, workshops, friends, and other fields of study, as well as my own invention.
And they nearly all have known solutions, often with fairly standard approaches.
Before A.I. became widely available, you could find those solutions in another textbook, or from a friend's notes, or through a repository on the internet. The point of this class is not necessarily to solve problems that have never been solved before. It is for you to develop habits of thinking that are used by mathematicians, scientists, and policymakers-to develop a sort of mental toolbox that can be applied to new problems. If along the way you happen to find a new way of solving one of the class exercises, that's great! I am constantly learning new things from my students. But you will be bereft of discovery if you rely on a LLM for solutions to the calculus problems before you. Here I mean the discovery of having your own realizations, crystallizing your own internal understanding, claiming the knowledge in a way that cannot be taken away from you.
That ownership is what I want for you, and that is what the course is built around.

If your institution's core purpose does not include supporting the humanity of all of your students, faculty, and staff, your institution is in fact engaged in this "politicization"
Institutional neutrality is a foundational component of a university’s commitment to its core purpose. To maintain public confidence and avoid politicization, universities — and their administrative leaders, including those in charge of academic units like schools, departments, and research centers — must refrain from taking institutional positions on political or social matters that are not directly connected to their core purpose.

Regularly scheduled caveat that being kind is NOT about being "nice". Where nice will lie and "just wants to get along," kindness is about accountability, responsibility, and honesty. It will necessitate hard conversations and good boundaries. It is often about doing what's hard, not what's easy.

“A delivery mechanism for information”? I am heartbroken that a book’s materiality can be taken so lightly. I am also thinking of how Innis’ ideas of time-based and space-based media work now. AI is somehow neither and demands the impoverishing of both.

Today is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. On this day in 1916, 780 men with the Newfoundland Regiment charged into battle at Beaumont-Hamel. Only 68 soldiers answered roll call the next day. That sacrifice is honoured at the Beaumont Hamel Memorial. 📸 NTV
At Beaumont Hamel, a bronze caribou statue stands on a rocky mound above layered hedges, shrubs, and grass. A path curves along the left side of the landscaped memorial area. Trees line the background beneath a grey, overcast sky.

Once again, not sure about the marketing strategy here of telling Writing Center directors that their tutors are bad at their jobs by misrepresenting what tutors do in order to sell them an AI replacement. The idea that a tutor just offer a "red pen" is both insulting and wrong.
Tutors in multilingual settings often feel like they are just "fixing" English instead of teaching academic fluency. Students whose first language isn't English usually need to understand why a structure is used, not just have it corrected.

When tutoring becomes just an editing service, students lose the chance to find their own academic voice.

Turnitin Clarity supports writing in any language and its AI assistant now interacts in 19 additional languages. It provides instructional guidance that helps multilingual students understand patterns rather than just accepting a tutor's red pen.
