The Yes on 3 campaign (jungle primaries) keeps saying that Q3 will lead to more candidates running. They fail to understand the actual barriers potential candidates face and will make those barriers even greater.
I have been volunteering for candidates up and down the ballot for 14 years, and what I always tell people is that the two biggest barriers for any candidate considering running for office are TIME and MONEY.

If you want to see more people run for office, you need to tackle the barriers of TIME and MONEY. Both are barriers that hit working-class candidates, grassroots candidates, women, and people of color especially hard.

Question 3 (all-party primaries/jungle primaries), by contrast, would increase the TIME and MONEY involved in running for office. That doesn't increase competition: it artificially constrains it by limiting who will even consider running for office in the first place.

The people who want jungle primaries in Massachusetts are the billionaires who would benefit from being able to sink money that other people don’t have into our elections

🚨After we forced a vote, the House passed our bill to restore the ACA subsidies Republicans let expire. This is an important step toward saving healthcare for millions of families—and a testament to what's possible when we organize & fight back. The Senate must follow suit.

Fun fact: Mariano tried to act like a vote that happened in 1994 was just a few years ago. By my count, 64 out of the 160 MA state reps were not even eligible to vote yet in 1994, with 8 of them not born yet.

According to @massgovernor.bsky.social Healey, the Democratic Party is all about cutting taxes. What world is she living in? This is why we fail and the GOP keeps cutting into our numbers. Meanwhile when we come up short what gets cut is programs helping low and middle income families. 😡

If the Senate Democrats do this, yes, it’s a massive betrayal of their base and an unconscionable abdication of their duty. Every single one of them who’s complicit in this scheme needs to be driven out of politics forever.

funny that the new metric for a social media site's success is if it produces healthy political discourse between "sides." by that measure, years of evidence suggests that twitter failed. it accelerated fracture, radicalized people into fringe politics, and became a tool for the reactionary right

This whole thread, truly! Stop engaging with these discussions on the GOP’s terms! We’re not opposed to the conversations on what went wrong. We just need to have them on our terms instead of letting the GOP dictate what the issues are.

Do people not realize the Right wing media machine is going to say what they’re going to say irrespective of what a candidate does or says? The idea that, if Harris had answered an ACLU questionnaire differently in 2019, the GOP wouldn’t have attacked her on trans issues, is laughable.

Mass. leaders vow Trump resistance. How about more progressivism here?
November 14th, 2024, 2:41 AM

As the Globe outlined last week (“Mass. leaders get ready to fight back if worse comes to worst,’’ Page A1, Nov. 8), Massachusetts legislative leaders responded strongly to Donald Trump’s recent victory. Unfortunately, I don’t believe their responses reflect the reality of their record and their recent inability to pass legislation.

When the right to vote was threatened, they made vote-by-mail permanent but skipped same-day voter registration. When Massachusetts residents voted to tax the wealthy, they eased taxes on wealthy estates. They made sports betting a priority even though it wrecks family finances and creates economic distress, especially for young men and Latinos, demographics that continue getting farther from Democrats’ reach. These decisions don’t live up to the values of a state that supported Kamala Harris by 25 points.

Many states supported Trump, but Massachusetts was not one of them. We owe it to our residents to respond to the urgency of this moment, so let’s act locally on Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic platform. Let’s make corporations pay their fair share of taxes, rapidly build enough housing to meet demand, expand tax credits for families, and make child care affordable. Will legislators live up to their postelection statements or will they go back to business-as-usual half measures? With some political courage, you’d be amazed at what we can accomplish.
