Nine weeks post surgery at University Hospitals Sussex where I had two resections for #crohnsdisease. Living with even a temporary #ileostomy is still a challenge, albeit a bit easier. And next week I'll make a trip to work in the Royal Astronomical Society offices in London. Photo: Jane Penny

I want my country back. By that, I mean a country where I would be confident that a thug who livestreamed himself stabbing an RNLI dingy on an active operation would a) Be universally condemned b) Be swiftly arrested, put on trial and if found guilty, face many years in jail. I miss that country.

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

Jodrell may be the symbol, but it's not the whole story. Welcome as the PM's intervention on Jodrell Bank is, debate earlier today showed MPs have concerns over a wide range of facilities, experiments and capabilities underpinning UK research strength. Nevertheless, the politics seem to be shifting.

Photo from last week. I'm still recovering 4.5 weeks after surgery for #crohns, including removal of a large fistular mass, an ileo-caecal resection and a temporary #ileostomy. This is what a 56 year old looks like and to challenge the stigma a bit.

Still here, mainly due to a high stoma output. A good chat yesterday with the surgeon, who explaining how he expanded one of the multiple cuts to help him pull hard to remove a mass of material, then installed the external resection. The smile is for the camera!

Several visitors today including this one who was desperate for Jane's sandwich. Quite how it recognised a lunchbox on the ninth floor escapes me, but it's admirable. Other than that I'm going through recovery after an ileo-caecal resectional, removal of a fistular mass and fitting a stoma.

Sadly it's hard to argue with this. There just isn't the ownership in government, despite hard evidence coming in from the affected communities. Much less than 1% of the UKRI budget is needed to stop the PPAN cuts, for example.

She's quite right that it won't assuage the deep concerns of researchers, and no hint it'll be fixed.

At today's UKRI board meeting, the fate of UK particle physics and astronomy will likely be decided. Have we done enough to convince the powers-that-be to halt the proposed funding cuts? 🤞 Read Prof. Hiranya Peiris in Nature today eloquently explaining why these cuts are wrong.🧪🔭⚛️ 📖: rdcu.be/friwM
Restructuring research funding as a choice between discovery and application gets the economics wrong, the evidence wrong and the people wrong.

A premise is gaining traction in science policy on both sides of the Atlantic: that fundamental and applied research are competing claims on the same budget, and that the balance must shift towards application. In the USA, the current administration has proposed cuts of billions of dollars to the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. In the UK, the national funding agency UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is restructuring its portfolio around government growth priorities, with curiosity-driven research nominally protected but the grant lines that actually fund investigators under severe pressure. The language varies — ‘doing fewer things better’, ‘aligning research with industrial strategy’ — but the underlying logic is the same. Fundamental science, the argument goes, is a luxury that becomes dispensable when budgets are tight. This premise is wrong, and the consequences of acting on it are already visible.
