To make sense of speech, listeners must segment sound streams into pieces. Across languages, people do so based more on consonants than vowels. Working in the verandah this morning, commenting on a student’s manuscript, I suddenly saw a rat coming out of the adjacent storage room. Although the creature must have realised there was a large, male primate only 2 meters away, it walked out into the garden at leisure, as if it owned the place.
