The cuts being made to humanities departments at UK HE institutions are reducing the opportunities that students have to study subjects like medieval literature, and amplifying pre-existing inequalities in the education system and beyond. Stop the cuts. #EnglishCreates #UCU #UKHE

On a more personal note: this would not have been possible had I not, many moons ago, studied English Literature at Royal Holloway after attending non-selective state schools. It was at RHUL that I was introduced to Middle English by the fantastic medievalists who taught me.

I can't explain how proud I am of @eleanormaybaker.bsky.social, the hard work she has done working with Eggers over the past year or so, and indeed how close I was to exploding the secret out of pride.

I’ve stopped giving a shit about critical thinking skills or any type of “employability” vector, I now pretty strongly believe the purpose of a degree is to learn about the subject you study in that degree, if my graduates leave their degree knowing about history then my job is done.

ITV News just vox-popped an older northern woman who said that she had switched from Labour to Reform because she was angry that illegal migrants were “getting hotels when British people can’t get hotels”. At some point Labour surely just has to say these people are completely politically illiterate

Clinical lead for the NHS and registered mental health nurse Conaghan said she was feeling "excited and nervous".
"I can't wait to see where all this money is going and finally get it back on our streets," she said.

Up there is @pixelatedboat.bsky.social's (I think) tweet response to 'how would you die in the 1800s' along the lines of 'blasting a railroad spoke through my skull to get me some of that Phineas Gage money'. 'mad Phineas Gage money' surprisingly regular addition to our vocabulary.
