Life may have had a bizarre start, with bits & pieces strewn on metal surfaces on the Earth's sea floor near or on smokers. A big evolutionary step might have been getting assembled & free of the need for metal surfaces. Speculation: What if ALH 84001 fossils were big enough for part of life? 🧪🧬

🧪🧬 About 45 years ago, I signed up for a graduate class I didn't have the prerequisites for. Quite possibly only the professors teaching it did. I couldn't drop out after the first class because it was so fascinating. We were studying how pores in membranes worked. I probably should have.

Dottie Number We were one of the first high school chemistry classes to have multi-function calculators. (Yes, we learned to use slide rules.) We had a guessing game: someone would pick a number and someone else would pick a function. We'd guess the answer and then check to see the result. 1/n

A cream colored shirt with a red and blue design featuring 9 crustaceans and a fly. A scuba diving Fly Says a”am I shrimp too?” A pistol shrimp wearing a cowboy hat says “bang bang” a mantis shrimp says KO, the title says a”shrimp city and friends” a hermit crab uses a skull

@astrohelena.bsky.social A friend saw your presentation at Allegheny Observatory last night. You went way beyond his training and he was very impressed I hope to see you here among the astronomers. I used this book for Earthbound things, but the number of citations in astrophysics are amazing!
A very worn copy of Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot's (BSL) red Transport Phenomena book.

I learned this for Earthbound chemical engineering.

It shocks me how many times BSL shows up in astrophysics papers and the like. We joked about relativistic fluid flow.

It's apparently not a joke. If you study the book, you'll figure out how to adapt it for Special Relativity. I would have no hope of adapting it for General Relativity.

AI is everywhere. In general, as many other (medical) illustrators I am sure, I have feared it will one day take our jobs. Yesterday, my friend Stephanie E. sent me the image on the right. A surgeon with a large Instagram following (Alexandre Mensier) posted it to teach people about Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome.

I am the illustrator of the image on the left, it was part of my dissertation. In order to create this work, I witnessed a (breathtaking) fetoscopic laser surgery in person by the specialists of Fetal Therapy LUMC, Leiden I have spent weeks researching in books as well as in the anatomy lab, speaking to specialists, making sure I would get the anatomy and proportions exactly right. Thinking about color use and how that would affect the viewer of the image. Waiting for feedback, sketching, resketching, and eventually painting every stroke by hand and digitally finishing the illustration. All to get to this carefully crafted illustration.

And then someone took it. Asked AI to make an image of it, just so they don’t have to pay an actual artist. No permission or credits needed. This is legal theft and there is not a thing I can do about it.

Not only did AI ‘take my job’. It, or rather the person using it, took my actual work, time and effort and stripped it of its very core: accuracy. A surgeon without gloves and a random number of fingers on each hand. Don’t even get me started on the anatomy of the mother or the poor fetus getting a laser through its head. I have felt every emotion seeing this monstrosity of an image. Created in mere seconds, directly from not only my work, but all the specialists involved that put their time and knowledge of years into it…a drawing on the left of a needle being injected into a foetus, and a machine-assisted copy of it the surgeon used
