“If they last” I am looking at data right now from @tandempv.bsky.social . Perovskites last just fine — if you know what you are doing. Longer than silicon cells, probably.

Basically AI allows software engineers to produce shitty code *faster* and in higher volumes which increases the amount time spent on code reviews and revisions nullifying the productivity gained from producing the code in the first place.

GREAT ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE NEWS!!! (Not a typo!) The Indonesian government has cancelled its insane Food and Energy Estates project, which would have deforested a land mass the size of Maryland. Amazing work by @mightyearth.org. A massive victory for the planet. mightyearth.org/article/indo...

Somehow all these models of our future assume that there is some OTHER group of very highly trained, insightful individuals who function as an underclass that will somehow be satisfied with endlessly reviewing the products of the Real Scientists to make all this work out.

Like many scientists, I’ve been mulling over the impact of LLMs on our fields. I’ve not yet seen it articulated, but I think there is a largely unspoken “invisible labor underclass” framework at play.

I haven’t had anything to say about this so far because real information about the event is so thin. Most of what you can read is blathering on for the sake of attention. This update from Dr. Bhadelia is level-headed and helps clarify how little anyone outside of Russia actually knows. #biosky

We should continue to hew closely to Lovelace’s vision of building systems that encourage a partnership between humans and machines. The responsibility rests with the engineers and tech companies that are building large language models and robots — and with all of us, in the decisions we make and the way we use our technologies every day. We should try to work in tight partnership, in a hands-on way, with the technologies we choose to use.

That means taking the time to understand how they work and requiring them to accurately display their reasoning and sources, delegating less to autonomous agents and choosing tools that invite our participation. Following the path set by Ada Lovelace, we can help assure a flourishing human future by favoring services and devices that have human-computer interfaces in the tradition of J.C.R. Licklider, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay and Steve Jobs: ones that are user-friendly, intuitive and interactive and that seek to include humans in every step rather than to seduce their users into letting them handle things without us.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead
