SPIDER - 2026 My piece for @paulscottcanavan.com 's excellent Mastering Imaginative Realism course. it's the hardest I've ever worked on a single image and has been a total goldmine for technique, research and workflow. sorry if you don't like spiders, I found painting this very healing.
a woman rides into battle perched on the back of an enormous spider, they emerge into sunlight from a glowing green cave, the woman is weilding a glave and is casting a spell that resembles tugging on a spider web. in the foreground a smaller spider is also approaching. image painted as the result of Paul Scott Canavan's excellent mentorship scheme.

A few more bits and bobs. This was my first project at Axis and, because I was coming in midway through development, I focused on the atmosphere and mood with tons of paintovers and notes. Also lots of fun little tasks like FX concepts, damage, several matte paintings etc
Shot overpaint to demonstrate lighting, atmosphere and the background matte I painted inFX overpaints - lots of lights and particlessssOne of several concepts for Sagira's broken lens.Shot notes to direct the lighting and fx folks

Happy Monday, here's some old Destiny 2 work (Curse of Osiris cinematic which I AD'd at Axis after the great Gareth Hector moved to another project) 🤘
Matte extension concept for this shot - I painted a bunch of mattes for this cinematic to fill out blank spaces, add additional atmosphere etc.Early concept for the overal atmosphere/fx and lighting look of the filmExploration for the end shot - lighting on MercuryAnother concept for the general chaos of the shot where everything goes down in slowmo. This started as an awesome concept by Gareth Hector who was previously Art Directing the cinematic (he had to leave halfway through and I took over)

Wide shot of the BRITISH MUSEUM. There are suggestions of fascism around the streets - tanks, barricades, an Orwellian 'Big Brother'-style poster on a wall. A voice of a TOUR GUIDE emanates from the museum:

TOUR GUIDE:
So the Tapestry tells acrucial chapter of our nation's history...

2
[Cut to interior of museum. A long Bayeaux-style TAPESTRY is on display, and the Tour Guide is speaking to a tour group]

TOUR GUIDE [smiling]:
How modern fascist Britain was created.

3
TOUR GUIDE:
The Tapestry begins here with the 2008 Crash, then austerity, then the AI Crash...

4
TOUR GUIDE:
...and by the end of the room it's just full-on fash.

5
CHILD IN TOUR GROUP [gesturing to the tapestry]:
What's this middle bit?

TOUR GUIDE:
This is the 2026 Battle of Legitimate Concerns

6
TOUR GUIDE:
[show a reporter standing next to the Dover protests]
Here's the media saying the government have got to do something about the legitimate concerns...

7
CHILD:
...About the failure of capitalism?

TOUR GUIDE:
No about brown people on boats

8
CHILD:
[pointing at boats crossing the sea on the tapestry]
Are these boats the mega-dinghies?

TOUR GUIDE:
Not all of them

9
[we see one of the boats is a giant yacht]
TOUR GUIDE:
That one's a superyacht,
carrying money from the American fascists to the British ones.

10
TOUR GUIDE:
You see really it's as much a story of convergence as it is of conflict.

[An alarm sounds in the museum]
DING DING DING DING

11
TOUR GUIDE:
Ok, tour over everyone

12
TOUR GUIDE:
It's time for the Two Minute Hate!

[They all leave the museum]

[ends]

Thanks for hosting, Lauren! I'm Michelle, illustrator in the TTRPG space! Here are some of my fave pieces!
An illustration of a goliath hunter on his mount in snowy mountain terrain, facing off against a crag cat. The Goliath is a young man, dressed in brown and white furs, accented with red and blue woven panels. He wields a red horsebow. His mount is a mixture of a reindeer and a markhor goat. His tack and gear matches the colors and motifs of his rider. He is mid leap. In the foreground, a white sabertoothed cat pursues the pair. In the background are snowy peaks and Giant ruins.A cleric astride a flying broom raises a glowing sword above a battle field. Golden, rays of bright light stream out from the sword. Her party members and herself are wrapped in golden glowing flowers and vines. They stare up at her in awe.

The party members, counter clockwise from the top left are: A dwarven artificer wearing jeweltones and riding a magic carpet, the cleric wearing a gold breastplate and blue robes; a giant fighter in full adamantine plate and a dragon helm; a half-drow Psi-fighter in blues and purples, floating mid-air and holding her crossbow; and a tiefling ranger, arms stretched out in joy and relief.

Behind the party members is a truly gargantuan giant, you can see him only up to his knees. He wears silver greaves and you can catch a glimpse of his great axe.

Ruins of a city are in the distant background.A blonde woman with deer-like ears and antlers (seemingly made of holly branches) stands amidst red haze which swirls around and forms a stag behind her. She holds a hand in front of her face, red spores matching the haze emanating from her fingertips.A man and a woman ride their mounts towards the camera side by side. They reach out to each other to hold hands. Joy fills their faces.

The man is a Goliath a long fur lined vest (no shirt underneath), riding a reindeer-esque mount. The woman is a curly-haired human wearing a loose western inspired smock-shirt tucked into tight riding pants with fringe at the hips. She rides a draft horse.

The Great Fairy in Ocarina of TimeIwata Asks interview:

Aonuma
The Great Fairy is one character you never forget.

Iwata
The Great Fairy is extremely flamboyant!

Aonuma
The first time I saw her, rather than smile, I drew back! (laughs)

Everyone
(laughs)

Aonuma
She comes out with a laugh, so I thought she might show up in my dreams. (laughs) No one but Haruhana-san could draw a character like that!

Haruhana
Thanks. (laughs)

Aonuma
And it's not like someone asked you up front to create an extremely garish fairy, right?

Haruhana
Right. If I drew a typical fairy, it would be boring. Like what I said earlier about figure, I think it's important to have a gap between what you do and what everyone expects. So at the very least, I wanted to take a half-step in another direction.

Morita
That's a half-step?! (laughs)

Haruhana
Huh? Oh, that's about three, no, maybe four steps! (laughs)

Everyone

An epically huge private #commission I just finished up! A map of The City of Novos, including portraits of the player characters that shaped it. >> vgen.co/CoveofMadness << #ttrpgart #ttrpg #fantasymap #cartography #fantasyart
City of Novos: 1st of Marpenoth, The Leaffall - Year Two

A fantasy map of a circular walled city, surrounded by grassland. To the west is a large river with a draw bridge spanning it. The central landmark is a Citadel with a gleaming beacon tower. Around the map proper is an ornate frame incorporating portraits of 12 adventurers, the founders and shapers of the city.

Top L Corner: A sleek female dragonborn with golden bronze scales. A purple-skinned female Goliath wearing golden plate armor and a helm made of a large-horned tiefling skull. A mariner with the looks of Willem Dafoe, covered in sea life and sporting a trident.

Top R: A muscular, red-haired male human with a full beard, wearing a dark feathered cloak and a large titan bone gauntlet. A golden male dragonborn with two sets of horns, wearing silver and gold plate and wielding a matching shield. An old human male with a large white mustache, wearing a dark stetson and tattered cloak.

Bottom L: A scruffy, middle aged human man wearing a wide-brimmed leather hat and holding a violin. An obsidian scaled dragonborn male, with the pipes of a bagpipe poking into frame. A grey haired male gnome with a long beard, wearing green monk gi and a half-mask made of bark. A large wolf stands in profile behind him.

Bottom R: A middle-aged male Goliath with dark shaved hair, a full beard and a large facial scar. He has cloud motif markings and a mace in the shape of a storm cloud. A blonde human male with sharp teeth and red eyes, wearing dark plate. A corpulent male Goliath in dark plate, a white three-eyed owl perched behind him.

A sketch thumbnail of a Dutch school, surrounded by water as canals weave between and past the buildings. Boats reside against a dock, and plants decorate flower beds. The final of the previous thumbnail, created using f-spy to capture the camera perspective of my original; blocked out in blender against my reference image, utilising applied materials on geometry; the blender image was then painted over to add texture, more vegetation, boats, and digital effects.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

What this means is that anyone involved in direct action protests could be sentenced as terrorists, whether or not they belong to a banned group and whether or not terrorism is *even mentioned at the trial*. Without informing the jury, the judge secretly marks the case as "terrorism connection".

Who knew that this could happen? I didn't. But it turns out that the Sentencing Act 2020 allows judges to send people down for crimes for which they have not been tried or convicted, with far longer sentences and far more draconian conditions than they would otherwise face. It gets worse - read on.
