As trawlers compete with Greenland sharks for halibut and cod, conservationists and fishers clash over what to do about misunderstood species

This brief communication presents two solutions for calculating absolute measures of error from time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) positioning in underwater acoustic telemetry arrays. First, a Monte Ca...

Acoustic telemetry is a core methodology for collecting fine-scale movement data for aquatic animals. When telemetry receivers are set up in closely spaced arrays with overlapping detection ranges, th...

Global problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?

Scientists have captured footage of a sleeper shark farther south than ever before, suggesting this Antarctic ocean is not shark-free

University of Plymouth news: New research led by the University has suggested changing how pollack are released after being caught by recreational...

The recreational fishery for pollack (Pollachius pollachius) in the northeast Atlantic is impacted by the species' high sensitivity to barotrauma. When captured at depth and brought to the surface, g...

kaltoa: Kalman Filtered Time-of-Arrival Positioning

Sharks are some of the most threatened animals on Earth, and accordingly many scientists who study sharks want their research to be useful for conservation. However, most scientific training does n…

Particle algorithms strengthen the value of acoustic telemetry for conservation.

The most remote inhabited island is racing to protect its seas – and only source of income.

<p>Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are widely applied in studies where a discrete-valued process of interest is observed indirectly. They have for example been used to model behavior from human and animal...

Well-researched stories from The Revelator, Smithsonian Magazine, and other great publications that bridge the gap between news and scholarship.

Marine fisheries are crucial to the food security and nutrition, economy and overall well-being of coastal communities. Maintaining the long-term prosperity and sustainability of marine fisheries is t...

The recent Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) sets ambitious goals but no clear pathway for how zero loss of important biodiversity areas and halting human-induced extinction of thre...

Abstract. Fish populations are declining globally due to increasing anthropogenic pressures. While research has been carried out to understand the impacts
