The problem with “common sense” is that it’s remarkably uncommon.

But the issue is not what the actual treaties say, it’s what the people who don’t understand them think. So there is actually a bundle of work to be done to explain this to the UK electorate in words they understand, ie small ones, to head off these kind of conversations.

Depends how hard they push Sweden into the question I guess, but basically yes, agree.

Richard Appleby @rmappleby.uk · 01/10/2026
But is the smart answer to that something like: “That’s exactly what we’re doing - committing to join the Euro if it becomes advantageous to us, just like Sweden has been doing for the last 2 decades.” ?

And yet, we pay him for a PMs private office, and give him security for life. For screwing over the rest of us. He should be publicly shamed, and “honours” and benefits withdrawn and cancelled, including all those honours he handed out to his paymasters and cronies.

My experience buying secondhand is that there is never a problem. Okay, the distance selling laws in the UK help us a lot, but the business sellers care far more about their reputation than the cost of writing off one bad bit of kit.

Quite. I also discovered you can even disable the on-chip graphics hardware (if your BIOS supports it) on the Coffee Lake generation CPUs to further reduce power / heat. I must admit that I did run memtest for 48 hours to make sure the RAM was good though...

I built my 'new' proxmox server entirely from second hand parts from eBay, CEX etc. It's not bleeding edge tech, but I've got a solid core i5-9600 with 32GB ram and 1.5TB nvme for £200. The most expensive part was the silent low profile CPU heatsink/fan 🙄

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

I couldn’t either, but the last 15 years has disavowed me of a lot of my fond but niaive beliefs about “the common man”…

I was wondering about going up to London to see this, but in the end decided the cost of getting there, plus the tickets to get in, was prohibitive given that we’ve both seen it before in France. Now feeling slightly relieved.

It’s utterly depressing, but really Harwood isn’t the biggest problem. It’s all the stupid people that believe what he says. And until we fix them, there will be an endless parade of Harwoods trying to monetise them.

Best thing I ever did. Now well over 1000 albums sat on my NAS, feeding Lyrion music server, which runs a wide variety of physical and virtual music players around the house. Next project is to extend it outside my home network so it works across the internet

I see we’ve got the BBC doing its thing, both-siding the possibility that the UK might want to revisit Brexit. So Newsnight got Andrew “I’m completely neutral” Neil in to savage some poor Labour chap. Depressing.

I think that's a good summation of the logic behind why joining as a full member again makes most sense. However. My guess is that there will be a lot of people for whom this is not a discussion involving logic or sense.

Surely that would be a really good result though, as I presume the cost of the social care up to the cap (ie the individuals responsibility) could be further mitigated by insurance?

I liked the implication that he was going to create an environment where uk citizens might actually be able to make an informed decision (unlike the Brexit nonsense, where significant numbers had no idea what they were being asked to do to themselves)

I’m not a Burnham fan. I was unimpressed when he was originally in parliament, and I really hated his coup. But I can forgive him all that and more after his speech yesterday. Ok, God knows how hard any of it will be, but it’s a vision I can really get behind. ❤️ tinyurl.com/4vhbdjsx

So, half the effect to allow for voter uncertainty? Would still leave Reform in fourth place, and the progressive parties well ahead of the right, though unlikely to be able to build an obvious clear majority?

The school I went to had assembly each morning with hymns. Surprising how quickly you can learn alternative lyrics, and sing them lustily. Fortunately it’s quite hard to discipline an entire school of children. I think our teachers must have hated us…

💯 I think we used to call people like him Conviction Politicians. I thought they’d all died out and been replaced with focus groupies that try to jump in front of the stampeding herd while shouting “follow me!”

Can’t say I’d look forward to it (I fell out with almost my entire family over Brexit), but if that’s what’s required to actually fix the appalling situation we’ve been left in, then bring it on.

You should prosecute politicians when they break the small laws, because you won’t have the chance later, when they break the big ones.

I’d like to see them throw the book at the idiot stabbing a RIB with a knife in the middle of the channel, with a French border patrol man aboard. Better yet, put him to sea in a little inflatable boat, with a big hole in it, and see how he gets on (since he doesn’t like the RNLI)

So, when did this happen? Could it have been since Brexit? No? When then? Since the Tories took power in 2010? No? Well why didn’t they fix it in their intervening 15 years in power then? The man’s either an ideologue, very stupid, or paid for an opinion.
