It's the hottest day of the year so pause for a moment to offer thoughts and prayers for all the Scottish pensioners cooking their Friday mince'n'tatties regardless, because Friday has *always* been mince'n'tatties night these past 50 years and they're not about to change the habit of a lifetime now

Telegram from my garden, an occasional series: The impossible tenderness of daffodils leaning towards the light.
Three daffodils catching the light. Two have peach-hued trumpets, fanning out like a crinoline. The other is a white and yellow daffodil that looks like a scrambled egg. A yellow glazed bowl sits beside the vase. Improbable blue skies all around.

We have these little bird shapes in the windows to keep birds safe, and at night the moon lights them up. They make me feel like a kid again each time I see them.
A picture window at night covered in pale outlines shaped like the ghosts of birds. A bit of moonlight falls through them and across the bed, where a rainbow colored blanket is spread.

Like so many others, I was immensely moved by Samantha Harvey's Orbital. It is a novel that invites a slow reading, requiring the reader to move at the pace of wonder and to think about what it means to love a vanishing world.

Thanks to Clare Carlisle, I spent the early spring obsessed with Celia Paul's visual art and words. Both Self-Portrait and Letters to Gwen John made me want to sit still and make things. They're also both saturated with yearning. Carlisle's own biography of George Eliot was also outstanding.

Isabella Hammad's writing is saturated with ghosts. I loved both Recognising the Stranger and Enter Ghost. Hammad is a writer who models engaging with theoretical ideas about politics, power, violence, and occupation without the distance and abstraction that can come with theory.

I read Marianne Brooker's Intervals during my first journey on the Eurostar and found myself especially moved by it. Reflecting on end-of-life care, agency over death, and grief, Brooker is a powerful storyteller who manages to stay close to her own experience while also speaking beyond it.

Hisham Matar's My Friends was a novel of friendship, time, and the (im)possibility of returning home. I also loved that it was a political novel that did not make its other themes subordinate to politics, showing instead how the grand plots of politics inflect daily life.

Ayşegül Savaş is a writer turn to when I think about what it means to make a life. Her new novel, The Anthropologists, reflects the joy of cramming loved ones onto a sofa and waking to feed them. There’s a sweet ache through it: the ache of being foreign, and of confronting what homes demand of us.

@garthgreenwell.bsky.social's Small Rain is one of the most tender novels of illness and recovery, and I want to press it into everyone's hands. Greenwell writes touch so well. He is thoughtful on the nostalgia and illusion of nobility / desire for transformation that sudden illness brings to life.
