Handcrafted products often carry labels that make individual artisans, skills and processes more visible. But what about the pay and working conditions of the makers in question? @nazlialimen.bsky.social @rkdasgupta.bsky.social & Diviani Chaudhuri explore #LSEInequalitiesBlog buff.ly/MNHUY3i

"Craftwashing" refers when claims about artisanship, heritage or benefits to makers are misleading, exaggerated or false. @rkdasgupta.bsky.social @lsegender.bsky.social, @nazlialimen.bsky.social & Diviani Chaudhuri investigate the practice and its harmful effects on @lseinequalities.bsky.social

Craftwashing: Misleading claims about artisanship, heritage or working conditions
Claims about artisanship, heritage and sustainability are used to justify premium prices. But are they verified - or is there a risk of “craftwashing”?

Sonia has written and posted obsessively about Jason Arday over the past week or so but would like everyone to stop talking about that please
Sonia Sodha, 20 mins ago

Suicide is always tragic. I wrote this in 2023 about the dangers of using a particular suicide or warnings about elevated risks of suicide to make bigger political points - even if it's well meaning. Sharing today in case anyone finds helpful

We should not have to constantly prove that we deserve the same presumption of good faith afforded to others. This is a tragic and horrific death and if the right wing media continue this way it will certainly not be the last one. 4/4

But there is something particularly chilling about watching colleagues of colour being subjected to this level of scrutiny and public targeting which has now claimed a young life. We should not have to accept this as the price of being an academic of colour. 3/4

I woke up to this news and just feel completely sick. My heart is with all my fellow academics of the global majority who are upset, angry and feeling rage at what has happened. As academics, we know just how disposable we are to our institutions. 2/4

Whatever one’s thoughts might be about the issues with Jason Arday’s work, he did not deserve to be hounded like this. Academics of colour should not be made to feel that this kind of hyper surveillance is normal, because it isn’t. And no, our white colleagues do not face this level of scrutiny. 1/4

Trans history post: Hijron ka khanqah (Hijra/transfeminine retreat) is a compelling reminder that our trans & queer histories do not require imprimatur from dominant global north-biased queerness. We are alive. This resting place for Hijra sisters in Delhi dates from 1452-1526 (Lodi dynasty). 1/2

It is Trans pride in London today which I’m sadly missing as I am in 🇮🇳 where I’ve just seen what can be achieved when people stand together. I send hope love & solidarity to those marching in London. Let’s hope the EHRC guidelines get consigned to the dustbin of history where it belongs. All power🏳️‍⚧️
