Starting Monday morning every candidate who Elon Musk is spending against should hold an event where they tell everyone Elon Musk has their Social Security number & he’s funding their opponents’ campaign so he doesn’t have to give it back.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

This is my theory of most of our problems right now, and specially, the oligarchy and AI intersection of problems
Two posts: it’s really hard for people to look at any insanely rich person and understand that they might be dumb or malicious. Because we have a national myth that smarts and hard work lead to success, but conversely if you have success you must be smart and have worked hard

there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.

Again, what right wing Republicans and Democrats call "socialism" is the sort of regulated capitalism that was consensus for much of the 20th century. They pretend it's anti-market when really it's only anti-oligarchy

Megan Rapinoe is a legend.
A black graphic with white text featuring a quote by Megan Rapinoe. The quote reads:

“At first it was like, Nobody likes women’s sports! and Nobody wants to watch it!

Or there was abuse happening, and nobody seemed to care.

Now, all of a sudden, we’re going to use a vulnerable group of people in the trans community to be like, Oh, we’re protecting women’s sports and we care so much about it?”

The quote is attributed at the bottom to Megan Rapinoe on The View, with the them logo in the top-right corner.

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

When a politician dies we see a lot of hagiographies about them. If you mention they were a terrible person IRL, you get chastised. My feeling? If you don't want people to talk shit about you after you die, don't be shitty when you're alive.

I am not trying to dunk here and also if library workers had been truly listened to in the last 10-15 years or so, the libraries being in danger would not be coming as a surprise to so many academics. Perhaps they would not be in as much danger, even.

If we actually want to appreciate moms, we should be providing free childcare, healthcare, and guaranteed income for stay-at-home parents to put more money in families’ pockets and ensure no SAHP is reliant on a partner for their economic security. Idk I think that’s better than 15% off a vacuum.

It's incredibly gendered to the point where some of the first industries targeted by AI were female-dominated fields like medical transcription, translation & teaching. There was such a push for AI to replace listening & interpretation of information because they were seen as low level skills.

100% accurate guide to the types of Open Access #academicsky 📚
An infographic titled "The Types of Open Access: A Field Guide," styled with Stardew Valley pixel art icons representing different materials. Ten types are listed:
Gold Open Access (gold ingot icon): The journal has no paywall, generally paid for by authors through APCs (article processing charges).
Diamond Open Access (blue diamond icon): Gold but no APC. Funded by an institution, scholarly society or collective.
Hybrid Open Access (brown lump icon): This journal lets you pay a ransom to open individual articles but still charges subscription fees to the community. What a bargain!
Green Open Access (grass icon): Author self-archives their own copy on a preprint server or research repository. Can usually be done with paywalled articles under certain conditions.
Bronze Open Access (bronze ingot icon): It's freely available on the publisher's website but has no CC license. Is this a mistake? What is this?
Silver Open Access (silver ingot icon): I'm giving a runner up prize. Could have been gold but for some reason the author chose a CC BY-NC-ND license.
Pyrite "Fool's Gold" Open Access (pyrite nuggets icon): Oops! Predatory publishers will take your APC money, but their services are fake. Beware!
Geode Open Access (geode icon): A librarian can break this open for you using the power of interlibrary loan.
Black Open Access (skull and crossbones icon): I don't know who started calling it this, but it just means piracy. They'll steal anything, including OA valor.
Slime Open Access (grey slime icon): Just slide into the author's DMs and ask for a PDF. You'd be surprised how often this works.

Anyway, AI is a managerial technology that came out of fields where researchers act more like managers than researchers and this is not a coincidence. It’s fundamentally related to why certain people jumped at the chance to try to build certain kinds of systems that devalued (other people’s) work.
