NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

Total collapse. We might see a spotless Sun soon. There are no incoming active regions, and current sunspot groups are in a state of decay. Solar activity is about as low as it can go... not to say future surges are not possible, but this will become the norm during solar minimum.

A Toast to Dear Old Poe - From Planet Mercury - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/dMyDzt
Date acquired: July 03, 2011

For as long as 70 years, a visitor to the original grave site of Edgar Allan Poe left a tribute in the form of roses and a bottle of cognac each January 19 (Poe's birthday). The "Poe Toaster" has not appeared since 2009, and it appears that the tradition has ended. Here we offer our own toast to the great American writer: a color view of Poe crater on Mercury. In this representation, Poe's raven-colored rim stands out from the tan volcanic plains that surround it. Tiny hollows speckle the dark rim like blue-white stars in the blackness of night. This sinfully scintillant planet/From the Hell of the planetary souls

This image was acquired as a high-resolution targeted color observation. Targeted color observations are images of a small area on Mercury's surface at resolutions higher than the 1-kilometer/pixel 8-color base map. During MESSENGER's one-year primary mission, hundreds of targeted color observations were obtained. During MESSENGER's extended mission, high-resolution targeted color observations are more rare, as the 3-color base map is covering Mercury's northern hemisphere with the highest-resolution color images that are possible.

The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first ever to orbit the planet Mercury, and the spacecraft's seven scientific instruments and radio science investigation are unraveling the history and evolution of the Solar System's innermost planet. Visit the Why Mercury? section of this website to learn more...

Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 6217

This image of barred spiral galaxy NGC 6217 is the first image of a celestial object taken with the newly repaired Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The camera was restored to operation during the STS-125 servicing mission in May to upgrade Hubble.

The barred spiral galaxy NGC 6217 was photographed on June 13 and July 8, 2009, as part of the initial testing and calibration of Hubble's ACS.

The galaxy lies 6 million light-years away in the north circumpolar constellation Ursa Major.

FU Orionis - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2sdQhtR
While perusing the Star Formation Newsletter #400, I became curious about something mentioned repeatedly among the papers. This is a particular star named FU Orionis, the first variable star of its type discovered and namesake of the class of stars eventually discovered to be similar, called FUors. Maybe it's because I am cheeky and I think the name is funny, especially the shortened one, and especially if you know of someone named Ori (FU, Ori. Sorry.) or maybe it's because the Wikipedia article image was distasteful to me, but I decided to make an image.

The star itself is the brightest star in the image, glowing yellow given this particular processing and filter set, just to the lower left of center. The available data are insufficient to really center the star in the composition without losing context and resolution, but it does have a pretty home at the tip of one of the many dusty star-forming pillars so common in Orion. I regret that I was unable to include the longer, skinnier pillar that it is directly at the tip of. It's kind of just near the tip of the pillar in this image. If you've read this far and are interested in seeing the other pillar, try this Aladin web viewer link. If you zoom out even further, you can see the larger bubble it resides in. The infrared view may be unfamiliar, but if you look just a little bit to the south, you can see the classic Orion Nebula.

White overlay: Spitzer/IRAC1 (3.6μm) (It's mostly just to add some sharp stars)
Red: Spitze...

Nothing unusual, and that's the point. NGC 300 is a close spiral galaxy. Many galaxies have at least some slight peculiarity, yet this one seems to be remarkably normal. And exactly for this reason, it is very interesting to astronomers.
A spiral galaxy glowing against the blackness of space. Its bright central core is surrounded by sweeping spiral arms dotted with numerous pink regions and clusters of young blue stars.
