You guys remember when Netflix was like $9/month, and it got you unlimited ad-free streaming of basically everything. And then 20 years later there's 12 different streaming services that all cost $20/month so you can watch 3 back-to-back ads at the beginning of every episode? And you guys […]

anyways, just figured I'd share the (TikTok video 💀️) that prompted this whole thread out of me. I can't stop thinking about this way of describing it. Plot-based media, as opposed to TikToks. Everytime I'm stuck scrolling on my phone, feeling like I can't […] [Original post on defcon.social]

In his book "Fahrenheit 451," Ray Bradbury presents us with an imagined future world that is entirely engorged in media -- not any media, however. They are invested in the easy media of the television, and have been taught to fear the difficult media that is books and literature, to the point […]

The rise of the internet promised a world where creators could meet viewers without needing to go through traditional gatekeepers like publishers or TV stations. They just upload their video, and interested viewers could click and watch². At the time, a lot of what was shared was creative stuff […]

Does anyone else find it weird just how much non-fiction media we're suddenly consuming, what with the rise of short-form social media content? Not really non-fiction in the sense of documentaries or prose books or anything. I mean, all of the different TikTok apps are littered with videos a […]

@pthane yep, exactly. PeerTube doesn't have creators on it. If it were to attract those creators, it would be able to properly compete with YouTube. But in order to get those creators, it needs to figure out an actual business model. After all, most channels nowadays are small content creation […]

I don't know entirely where I'm going with this, but I just feel like as great as PeerTube is sort of right now as a proof of concept on a technological scale, I don't think the social/economic aspect has been proven out. I think in order to succeed, PeerTube will need to find *some way* to give […]

PeerTube doesn't provide ad revenue. It also -- at least in my experience as somebody who hasn't really used it for very much -- doesn't have great search or discovery features outside of local posts by users on the same instance. Maybe that gets better if I make an account? But anyways, it […]

Some thoughts about PeerTube I've been having. My biggest complaint about PeerTube as a viewer is that there's really not much interesting content on there (most creators only post to YouTube), and even when there is, very few of the people I follow on YouTube are on PeerTube. There's a […]

Xkcd 1732 was made ten years ago, but we're still _exactly_ on the "current path", which is, without exaggeration, the doomsday scenario. If we can't get the needle to move only a tiny bit over a decade, we need to be a lot louder apparently. For full accessible […] [Original post on mas.to]

A thing I've been thinking about recently. Many websites are built with static site generators, using markdown source files, which are just the "content" of the page, without all the html for the layout of the page (including navbars, background images, and the geometry of the page). What if […]

So it's literally got recursive submodules. And recursive makefiles for those modules. I call a setup script that calls a makefile that then calls another makefile. I feel like I'm building a Rube Goldberg machine... And the worst part is that it literally works.

I lowkey feel like I'm in git submodule hell with this thing lol It's already a big project with like 3 different parts. The web app frontend has a markdown editor that's a git submodule of something I forked. The API handles login security with the SLIM C++ library I wrote. Since I can't call […]
