19TH CENTURY GADGETBAHN ALERT (Arguably not a gadgetbahn since it’s useful transit) (I rode this thing 2 years ago and it’s absolutely terrifying if you have a fear of heights like I do)

Any given specific NIMBY argument—about infrastructure capacity, or home values, or aesthetics—is nearly always just a shell game masking generalized opposition to anything changing, and which is why it's a waste of time to engage with NIMBYs on details.

The Tycon Center, known locally as the “shopping bag building” (get it? it’s a building shaped like a shopping bag next to the biggest mall in dc. Isn’t postmodern architecture great?)

An adaptive reuse of a suburban tower always seemed like a bit of a long shot to me but it can’t be understated how much even 5 over 1s aren’t penciling out anymore. We’re about to get a ton of townhouses on prime TOD land

The Recurring Speed Camera Discourse is a bit exasperating really because, look, we all know what's actually happening is people just want to be able to commit the pertinent crimes and don't like being punished for it, but people come up with obvious post-hoc pseudo-woke rationalisations for this.

The Jones Beach chapters in the Power Broker are some of the best and most heartbreaking—genuinely beautiful and transformative infrastructure (for the white middle class) built by the guy who in many ways ensured we would never be able to build this sort of stuff quickly or easily ever again.

Honestly no Dodge Challenger on this list is wild. Isn’t it great how one US car company explicitly markets to assholes who drive like maniacs? Considering how well Stellantis is doing rn that might be their entire customer base.

"I want to be an architect but I'm not good at math or drawing" WRONG 👎 Does it bother you when things don't line up? Have you gotten Mad About Fonts? Can you herd cats? Do you enjoy being sort of good at a lot of things? These are far more important questions to ask yourself.

The 2014 LA Metro High Desert Corridor Draft EIS cover will never see the light of heaven (the Northwestern University Transportation Library)
Man I’m not even sure how to describe this one uhhh just imagine the “graphic design is my passion” meme if it was the cover of a high speed train line EIS. Is the tiger swallowtail even native to California? Why is one of the butterflies pride flag colored? Anyway here’s the text:

When I think of harmonious classical compositions, my mind always goes to the definitive modernist memorial, its knockoff, and a view that is almost entirely trees and an unornamented obelisk. (algae aside) archive.ph/mz36Z
One of the highlights of my job as a U.S. senator is meeting Indiana veterans while they tour the National Mall. It's a weighty experience for everyone involved. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial, where we often meet, sit on opposite sides of the Mall's Reflecting Pool, at probably the prettiest point in Washington.
The harmony of the surrounding neoclassical monuments creates a sense of permanence.

I shit on DDOT a lot but the sidewalk gap program is a really cool and useful program. MoCo has something similar but it’s request-based and currently overwhelmed by requests. Would be nice to have a more objective process with better funding to build this sort of essential infrastructure.
