The details aren't quite up on the website yet, but @dancingmedievalist.bsky.social and I are organizing a subtheme for the 2027 @sewaneemedieval.bsky.social that I'm extremely excited about. Deadline for abstracts is 10/15, give us all your authentic/inauthentic hot takes!
Scandalous In/Authenticity
Megan L. Cook | Colby College | mlcook@colby.edu
Clint Morrison, Jr. | University of Wisconsin - Whitewater | morrisoc@uww.edu

In response to the conference theme, this thread invites panels and papers that consider moments in medieval literature and culture in which authenticity or inauthenticity becomes a site of scandal, concern, or disruption. Such moments of epistemic crisis inevitably raise foundational questions about perception, the nature of truth, and social norms and cohesion.

Recent work on authenticity and inauthenticity has considered the complicated relationship between the concept of the “original” and the “forgery” respectively, emphasizing their mutually constitutive status. What can we learn about structures of meaning-making in and about the Middle Ages by considering instances disputed, ambiguous, or contested authenticity?

Papers might consider these issues within a range of frameworks, including:
the textual (canon, attribution, translation, apocrypha and pseudepigrapha)
the ludic (disguise, performance, impostors)
the religious (discernment, heresy and orthodoxy, relics)
the aesthetic (artifice, imitation, copying)
the moral (forgery, hypocrisy, deceit)
the political (public attitude, accountability, narrative, sovereignty, succession)

We also welcome proposals that consider questions of authenticity and inauthenticity in the Middle Ages diachronically, whether by looking to medieval ideas about the biblical and classical past, or to post-medieval explorations of the Middle Ages through medievalism, historiography, or even hoax.

Fifteen years ago, in the classroom, wikipedia was annoying because it was hard to describe to kids who relied on it why it wasn't a good source to cite in a paper. Now, it's the final remaining example of citational responsibility any of them have ever seen.

This seems like a ridiculous take, and substitutes some kind of nostalgic memory of college students of yesteryear. Who says mom and dad are picking up the bills? Who says they aren't working year-round? Forcing college students to do absentee will drive down their vote.

This actually is the root of a lot of my anger and frustration, and yes, grief. I spent years crafting accessible classrooms, advocating for tech, and now every measure I use for access is misused by (mostly able-bodied) students who want to cheat with gAI. And our institutions are no fucking help.

I spent years fighting for tech in the classroom for disability access reasons, arguing that no, accommodation wasn't enough, go for universal design. I've given up. I've lost. AI humping motherfuckers ruined it. As they ruin everything.

Ive been saying this for a while, when you see the hype around "AI" through a disability studies lens, you really do see that so much of the hype and fantasies are about defeating death, but also "curing/conquering" disability. Many powerful people in SV are aging, and it terrifies them.

there is something about visible disability tech/prosthetics that catalyzes ableism. Ive never confronted as many brazen questions about my epilepsy as when Charlie was my seizure alert dog. The technology/animal becomes the material focus of all that rage and suspicion re disability.

something in there about how prosthetics and disability tech catalyzes ableism, in a way that not using prosthetics and disability tech does not. Same with service animals. The technologies, sentient or not, become the catalyst for a flood of suspicion, distrust, anger and ableism.

I did an OCR conversion of all my PDFs to make text files, built a semantic search index, and can just let my agents roam free to answer questions, fact-check, dig up interesting stories, quotes, etc. It takes a lot of the hard work out, as well as a lot of the human error. 2/2

Reade to the ende of thys! From Oliver J. Rosten, "On functional representations of the conformal algebra" Theoretical Physics (2017):
The acknowledgements at the end of an academic article include the following: "This paper is dedicated to the memory of my friend, Francis Dolan, who died, tragically, in 2011. It is gratifying that I have been able to honour him with work which substantially overlaps with his research interests... I am firmly of the conviction that the psychological brutality of the post-doctoral system played a strong underlying role in Francis's death. I would like to take this opportunity, should anyone be listening, to urge those within academia in roles of leadership to do far more to protect members of the community suffering from mental health problems, particularly during the most vulnerable stages of their careers."
