Final book of the trip, picked up in Belfast, a fantastic novel from the author of A Ghost in the throat, continuing her studies of the spectral in the archive, parsing through the records of a Victorian psychiatric hospital in the process of being gentrified into apartments. Five stars.

Third novel of the trip,a history of the tensions between land and territory and the aftermaths of colonialism in terms of loss and emigration. The spatial writing and expansive imagination are very good but character development is flat. May have been better as an epic or a novella than a 350p book

A lovely family saga imagining the life of the unknown woman in Klimt’s Portrait of a Lady and her fictionalized descendancy up to the present, a bit syrupy but will well-written characters and a strong structure of temporal shifts. A good plane read.

I finally read three Harpman books back-to-back. They are absolutely masterful. What a writer, a Woolfian existentialist, someone who takes the aesthetics of postwar malaise to fascinating speculative directions. Two novels and three novels masterful in their distinct ways, all must read.

Na Hong-Jin’s Hope is hands-down the wildest ride of an action film I’ve seen in years, a brilliantly bonkers take on the monster film that becomes different and unexpected as it progresses. It will be polarizing because of its left turns, it is both imaginative and nuts. In theaters .

Another excellent novel from Moldova, one about loss and nostalgia, narrated in the border between the real and the oneiric, full of dark affects and intense atmosphere, Scerbani really masterful, another great translation by Ochoa de Eribe, sadly I do not believe this is in English.

A little bibliographical jewel. I saw this at the Ruta y Destino exhibit in Mexico City and I found a copy on eBay: a tourist guide for motorists written by Anita Brenner and illustrated by a couple major artists. This is the fifth edition from 1947 (the original is from 1932)

Obreht’s fiction is always intriguing. This one nests three stories surrounding a plane crash and a ghost town to construct a very compelling tale of the everyday textures of the US West building on some ideas already present in her second novel, Inland. A good, discreetly Borgesian novel.
