A thing I learned not too long ago is that when an LLM selects a token that leads it down an incorrect path (factually), it has no way to back up, or even know that it should back up, it's just on to the next likely bit. Literally every LLM is just posting their way through it. What an image.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

What's happening is that Republicans are priming Democrats and Democratic voters for more violent forms of transphobia. They're manipulating people into caring about something that is most likely never going to affect them.

To the people complaining these sex abuse cases have created a world where men now have to think 10 times before they touch a woman. Yes, that's the point. It's called consent. Welcome to human decency.

reading and writing are being relegated as not necessarily useless skills to capitalism but rather threatening skills when not tamed and channeled through relations of production disciplined by Capital, such as the corporatized media industry, neoliberal university, and genAI.

having studied such outreach efforts—i think the real secret sauce is Mamdani’s popularity. (sheer number of tickets on offer is also impressive!) Others have done culture passes, discount/free tix codes for first timers, low income, young ppl etc but they can be surprisingly difficult to promote

magic touch also includes helping with one of the hardest things to convey through institutional channels which is that this is truly for you yes YOU. you need a certain kind of influencer, even, to not make it feel like charity or what Ralph Locke once called “eating your cultural spinach”

There‘s much to appreciate in Mamdani, but his insistence that culture isn’t a privilege of the rich is one of his strengths. It is reminiscent of how unions and the government treated it in the 1930s -art for the masses - paintings, music, opera, theater - democracy for all.

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.

A lot of people are not well right now: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is an excellent time to de-escalate conflicts and to lean into patience. This is true in our personal lives and also (maybe especially) online when it's overwhelmingly strangers crashing into each other.

This piece on how companies (and yes, this applies to higher education) getting rid of middle managers may backfire is well worth your time to read. If the positions are viewed as being too risky to take, there goes your leadership pipeline. www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
Middle managers often act as informal therapists for their direct reports. The good ones are attuned to what motivates people on their teams and who works well with whom. They also serve as executive whisperers, translating the goals and strategies from bosses on high, while also acting as buffers for those higher up the ladder, sparing executives the headaches of petty issues.

Leaders who expect AI to free them to concentrate on major initiatives will ultimately inherit the personnel dramas and small decisions that deputies used to take off their plates. They may also find their grand plans don’t get executed when there are no rallying forces at the team level.

Get ready for the in-demand middle managers’ comeback tour in a few years’ time. The only question is, when companies realize they cut too deeply, will there be enough bosses willing and able to step up?

"They"? What? What's fun about Republicans is that they get to smear an entire political group as responsible for one random person's actions, but they themselves will deny any responsibility for the actions of their own deranged president or the racist billionaire who has bought them all.
They killed Charlie Kirk—one year ago today.

Then they spiked the football, openly celebrating his assassination.

A year later, they’re planning parties to savor that horrible tragedy.

Black text on white page that reads:

In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.

None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.

We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.

Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at nyc.gov/workerpower.

Good grief. Yes, by their very nature, charities have some sort of ideology. It’s often right in their mission statements.
"I guess I have sort of a contrarian view where a lot of charities and philanthropies are actually net negative on the world. And they get captured. It's actually remarkably hard to find a foundation that has not gotten captured by ideology," Armstrong said.
