Whether there’s lateral airflow or not (I’m struggling to hear it), the final nasal is dark in resonance.

There are numerous Firthian analyses from the 1940s onwards that attribute contrasts like these similarly: features of parts of syllables or other similar ‘pieces’.

No, the point is that what you call moose in America is called elk in Britain and älg in Sweden. Just like your robins are not like ours.

Richard Ogden @richardogden.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Yes, elk. Moose if you’re in America, where elk refers to an animal we (in Britain) call a deer. If you want etymological evidence, elk in English is älg Swedish.

Thanks to Marina’s hard work and wizardry setting up recordings with belts to measure breathing, video cameras and mics, we were able to take a first look at breathing in interactional today, starting with a word search — the start of some exciting work!

Her work argues that phonetic details like this tell us a lot about word structure and meaning, and we use it. “Mistake” doesn’t have transparent morphology to most English speakers, but “mistime” does. So your observation is grounded in linguistic structure.

Richard Ogden @richardogden.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
There are many features that distinguish eg mistake from eg mistime: transparency of meaning, rhythm, the duration of the sounds, and the amount of aspiration for [t] — almost none for mistake, plenty for mistime. Lots of work on this by Sarah Hawkins at Cambridge.

Not sure I've seen this change-in-progress in writing before. The verb 'are' agrees with the things just before it ('bikes' and 'larger items'), not with 'space', which is the (singular) subject of the verb.
A sign on board an LNER train in the UK. "Storage space for bikes and larger items of luggage available on this train."

Personally I’ve seen it as being a guard against worshipping the ritual rather than what lies beyond it; and of making things into any empty form. We can even do that with our silent worship, which isn’t just silence.

In response to my rant yesterday, I was asked how we can make better parks and other public places for teenage girls? What do they want? I have answers to this, so now a positive 🧵. Starting in Sweden, where this was co-designed by teenage girls.
Frizon shelter - a curved space with seats like swings and lovely coloured perspex in the roof and a view of the city of Umeå at dusk. Two teenage girls sit in one of the swing seats having a chat.

And the spelling supports this too: <au> in English isn't usually natively [aʊ] (I mean, look at poor Finnish, with its 'sauna'!).

So I'd say this is evidence that the lexicon isn't one big system, but lots of smaller interacting systems, and part of their status as systems is slightly different patterns of distribution. This is 'the phonotactics of German (etc) names in English', etc.

Richard Ogden @richardogden.bsky.social · 27/04/2026
I don't know all these names, but the point is, they are names, and names are often not like other words. The Scots (and Geordie) exceptions are noticeably Scots/Geordie precisely because they 'feel' different from other words -- you can recognise their origin by their phonotactics

Call me Cassandra, but if you make thousands of HEI staff either compulsorily or 'voluntarily' redundant and create conditions in which senior staff take early retirement in an attempt to save more junior colleagues' careers without significant new hiring, a critical loss is exactly what happens.
