Morning! But not good morning to the chirping frog who kept me up all night: “Twerk Tchurk!” Off to London soon so a classic I’ve never read: The Napoleon of Notting Hill by Chesterton. But also rereaading Everything Will Swallow You by @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social because it’s just that beautiful.

Late to the party this time. I’m reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Michael Smith. I’m about ½ way through. I can’t wait to see how it ends. (a joke. I’ve read it many, many, and still more many times.)
A striking woodcut style of Sir Gawain on his horse.

Moien! I'm about halfway through Curious Events Lately Occurring In This Neighborhood by @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social. Imagine the drawer in your house where all the "maybe I'll need this later" stuff sits around. There's a hammer, but also flower salts, that little gizmo...

Howdy. I’m actually reading absolutely nothing beyond the internet stream. I got my flu, covid, and SRV vaccines on Friday and I’m just wiped out. But I will say it’s absolutely worth it. According to the pharmacist, this season’s flu is a bad one. Stay healthy all you readers. Here’s some calm.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

A story of finding self & closure in the most unlikely of places, @danielkraus.com’s Whalefall demands not to be put down. You fall—hook, line & sinker, a cliché I’m sure others have used before me, unlike the many instances of sparkling prose throughout his book. For the writing alone, a delight.

Is anyone else reading the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact comic series? I'm going to finish it, but I'm also finding it to be... short on story/plot. It just seems to be chugging along, but I'm hoping it picks up speed. Also, can that name be any more cumbersome? #StarTrek

Finished The Dragon Has Some Complaints by @wiswell.bsky.social. What does it feel like to truly be all the little voices in your head? A dragon with 3 heads & the lingering trauma of having lost the 4th can help you feel the answer & the hope of healing. A humdinger of a fun ride filled with joy.
The lively cover of The Dragon Has Some Complaints by John Wiswell. A woman with long windblown hair sits in the center of three dragon heads. The head on the top left is wearing a monocle and looks rather contemplative. The upper right head looks more like the classic “I might burn you to ashes in a second” dragon expression. While the bottom center head smiles with an open mouth of pleasure while the woman gives him scritches on his head.

Heading in to county fair season! The one time of the year that I miss living in rural America. The displays in my urban fair are just not the same. Here’s a couple of veggie-animals seen in New Hampshire’s Merrimack county. Their fair was in Contoocook. The 4H kids had oxen. I want to raise an ox!

Finished Oak and Ash and Thorn by @pfiennes.bsky.social today. A beautiful exploration of trees and their forests and what we have lost and where we should move forward. Also a lovely reminder of how many poems are arboreal. I wish I felt better about our trees and our future.
A recent photograph of the early fall foliage in New Hampshire (US). The photo can never truly capture the wonder of such change and the promise of the spring to come. Always reminded of Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
