For the Home Secretary, it's more important to be seen to be harsh to an immigrant than to protect women, because it would involve protecting women in some other country.

Currently processing some academic feedback on an online course and it inspired this little schematic.
A two by two grid, with columns marked consequential and inconsequential, and the rows being actionable and unactionable. The detailed descriptions as follows.
Consequential: Implementing the feedback would be noticed by future readers / viewers / users of the work.
Inconsequential: Implementing the feedback would have negligible effect on the future understanding of the work.
Actionable: It is immediately clear what successful implementation of the feedback would look like.
Unactionable: It’s unclear what implementation of the feedback looks like without multiple further rounds of feedback.

The intersections are marked with various faces from happy to angry, with happiest in the consequential and actionable section, and the angry face in the unactionable and inconsequential section.

Ultimately, I think our problem is this:
Three-way Venn diagram of “what AI is good at”, “what AI is sold to us as”, and “what we want AI to do”. What it’s good at says: Very specific tasks, with specific outcomes, that it has been very specifically trained for. What we want says: Cure cancer, do the dishes, automate the tedium of life. What it’s sold as says: Save you time and effort, and usher in an era of unrivalled productivity and infinite profit. The intersection of what we want and what it’s good at says: generate boilerplate code snippets. The intersection of what it’s good at and what it’s sold as is plagiarise Wikipedia articles. What we want and what it’s sold as is summarise Teams meetings. Finally, the intersection of all three is a bunch of laughing emoji,

Students have no attention span and can't concentrate for a long time. This is a moral and intellectual failing on their part. The videos we get with our mandatory training are terrible and I can't get to the end, though they're <2 mins. This is **not** a moral or intellectual failing on my part.

The ads you see during the Super Bowl every year always reinforce my theory that 85% of people in the ad industry have absolutely no idea what they're doing, and no sense of what makes customers buy or not buy their products. Just throwing stuff out there to see what happens.

Academic Skills keep being asked "How do I make a poster?!?" by students, and apparently we have no centralised guidance. So, that's January's job sorted.
An minimalist diagram of three similar poster layouts, with small simplified icons to represent figures and straight lines to represent text. The first is crowded, with a lot of text and very much like a typical poster -- it would probably look horribly cluttered with real text and images. The last one only has six large figures and a title that takes up about half the page. The middle one is a balance between the two extremes.

There will be so many cars that none of them will be able to move
MOTORING-- Cars will be wonderfully improved during the next hundred years and you would hardly recognize them as the outcome of our present primitive vehicles. One of the reasons for this is that there will be so many of them that none of them will be able to move.

#AdventOfCode Day 4 in #Excel. Still needs two cells because I'm referencing the split input (well, the concatenated-then-split-then-wrapped input because Reasons) using OFFSET(). (same issue as in Day 2)
Screenshot of Excel, showing a grid of at simples, x symbols and dots, and a formatted piece of code that uses a scan function to go across an array, count the cells in the three-by-three grid around it, and return appropriate values.

Possibly my greatest contribution to #Chemistry.
Simba and Mufasa from the Lion King looking out over the Pride Lands. However, on close inspection they appear be wearing crudely drawn white lab coats and safety goggles. The captions read "As lab demonstrators, everything the light touches is our kingdom."

"But what about that shadowy place over there?"

"That's the technicians' prep room. You must never go there."

I think we're good to reveal the whole Christmas #Chemistree at Hull. 100 pieces of glassware (I think) in total. No liquids in it this time as I've dangled lights into the flasks instead.
A Christmas tree viewed from above, lit with some bright blue-white LED lights. A low angle shot of the tree showing its height. I didn't measure it. Distant shot of the tree, showing that each bauble is actually a piece of Chemistry glassware. A lot of lens flare on this as I didn't wipe my camera properly.
