So sad to hear that the iconic, trailblazing, Apollo 11 moon landing software engineering lead, Margaret Hamilton, is no longer with us. Love this image of her, standing next to a print out of the software that landed Buzz Aldrin and Neil Amstrong on the moon! 👩‍🔬🔭🛰️🧪 ℹ️: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

Also every time an AI does something that would bring a human to prison if they did it, someone in the company needs to go to prison.

It is worth it if the objective is just to get a diploma, it is not worth it if you want to learn something and be competent. Interestingly those who use AI but still spend the same time working still have a score decrease but much smaller.

I will be using this Figure at the begining of my courses and insist that I'm back to paper exam this year. It shows the scores of AI using student for homework increased but decreased for exam. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
AI adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.

I'm burnt out of discussing "AI". I don't care for the press releases from big companies. I hate having to comment immediately. I dislike "hot takes". I'm worried we, as scientists, are losing touch with scientific values. We've become customers, salivating at ads marketed to investors. 1/15

I agree game is not the word, optimize is better. My point is that if everyone does it, everything changes with maybe short term individual advantages (more publications) but longer term potential major issues (less mentoring, less financing, too much "noise", how to review).

To be clear those are impressive tools that can be used to do better research, but also to game traditional research metrics which can have unintended consequences (Goodhart's law) so we must be careful and change how we use them and how we evaluate what is good research.

As scientists we should remember that when we talk science with an AI model we teach private companies how to do science and not a new generation of scientists that will contribute to society. Time spent doing faster research with AI agents is not spent mentoring students. Better CV but worth it?

This article in Le Monde about French research in general and the CNRS in particular has a few depressing graphs www.lemonde.fr/sciences/art...
The graph highlights a growing divergence between Germany and France:

* In the mid-1990s, France and Germany spent similar shares of GDP on R&D.
* Germany subsequently increased its R&D investment by about 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France’s R&D effort remained largely stagnant.
* By 2023, Germany spends 3.15% of GDP on R&D compared with 2.18% in France, a gap of nearly 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France is also well below the OECD average (2.93%).

The figure therefore illustrates that France has fallen behind both Germany and the OECD average in R&D intensity over the past three decades.
