Los Estados de bienestar son un mecanismo fundamental de redistribución, mediante el cual los recursos obtenidos a través del sistema fiscal se reasignan en favor del interés general. En el marco de las economías mixtas del bienestar, las prácticas redistributivas se encuentran cada vez más dispersas en el seno de la sociedad civil. Ante un contexto de austeridad y recortes en el gasto público, las herramientas y plataformas digitales se presentan como una promesa para que las organizaciones sociales obtengan financiación a través de donaciones individuales. Las plataformas y herramientas digitales suelen presentarse como intermediarios neutrales. Ahora bien, estas desempeñan un papel activo en la configuración de las economías mixtas del bienestar. Las plataformas digitales estructuran y organizan el mercado de causas sociales, contribuyendo a definir las brechas en el Estado de bienestar y canalizando recursos hacia determinadas iniciativas sociales en detrimento de otras. En su conjunto, el ecosistema digital promueve modalidades de redistribución más horizontales, menos verticales y, por lo tanto, menos progresivas. Las iniciativas de la sociedad civil y entidades del tercer sector emplean una amalgama de herramientas digitales de manera cotidiana, competente e ingeniosa. Sin embargo, la digitalización de la recaudación de fondos genera una carga de trabajo digital significativa y deriva en descontentos y procesos de negociación complejos. Si bien estas organizaciones utilizan la tecnología siguiendo las normas dominantes y los usos previstos, también la emplean para experimentar con formas alternativas de organización social. Los imaginarios redistributivos son concepciones colectivas y de sentido común sobre la redistribución. Los imaginarios dominantes privilegian prácticas situadas en el nexo entre la sociedad civil y el mercado, al tiempo que el relato sobre la decadencia del Estado de bienestar se asume como una realidad de sentido común. Las afirmaciones sobre las ventajas de la transición digital tienden a alinearse con visiones mercantilistas de la provisión de bienestar social. En las economías mixtas del bienestar, existe una fuerte interrelación entre impuestos y donaciones. Los imaginarios redistributivos tienen implicaciones para el futuro de los Estados de bienestar europeos y para la sostenibilidad de los sistemas de fiscalidad progresiva.
