For sure! Nature journaling is a required component of my intro ecology class, and I make sure to show off my sloppiest expo marker drawings beforehand to emphasize that it's about observation and not artistic ability

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

I do not want an "AI companion". I want to read the author-written synopsis (aka abstract) without Wiley's Clippy-analog pop-up in the way. If anyone knows a better way to make those go away forever, LMK

Here are some of my favorite redonkulous asters
Packera greenei (flame ragwort) It's vividly orange, ray florets flamboyantly extending in every direction like just-woke-up hairLiatris pycnostachya (prairie blazing star), dramatically tall pink inflorencesGnaphalium palustre (Western marsh cudweed) tiny pale clusters of flowers, looks more like messy q-tip tips than an asterLasthenia californica (california goldfields). Bright yellow, elegantly recursive vibes with some individual flowers looking like tiny daffodils

Yikes! We've expedited the scanning step by having field crew take a photo of each datasheet as it's finished on their phone or the field tablet, and then upload those photos to a folder as soon as they're back in the office. Has saved us more than once with high winds, weird spills, etc!

I appreciate the point of the metaphor, but would push back on the idea of fire as a servant. Restoring healthy landscapes requires restoring our relationship with fire, supporting Indigenous leadership, and thinking of fire as a teacher not just a tool

For those who haven't heard of this yet, the fastest/easiest way to reduce indoor air pollution from wildfire smoke is to get a basic 20x20 box fan, and slap a single 20x20 air filter (make sure it's very high MERV) on the back. No tape or anything, it just sticks to the back of the fan.
