New research out today! Some animals have three eyes?! This eye isn't for "seeing" per se, but it's connected to a part of the brain responsible for regulating body temperature. So if you see a lizard basking out in the sun to get warm, oftentimes this eye plays a central role. But there's more...

The Turtle Death Layer coughed up a fossil with teeth marks, revealing a conflict between turtle and gar! 🐢 Paleontologist Jason Bourque recently described a new, extinct species of musk turtle that lived in Florida during the late Miocene. Story: www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/anci...
A man wearing a museum baseball cap and a short-sleeved shirt examines a fossil using a binocular microscope. A name tag on his shirt reads “Jason Bourque, Paleontologist.” He is seated at a workbench with fossils and tools visible in the background.Close-up of a fossil turtle shell. The shell's surface features a network of polygonal scutes, exhibiting a cracked and textured appearance indicative of its age and fossilization. The shell is a warm brown tone against a black background, emphasizing its detailed surface patterns.Close-up of a preserved alligator gar skull. The skull is light-colored and weathered, with visible teeth lining both jaws. Many sharp, pointed teeth are present, especially in the lower jaw, creating a textured appearance. The skull rests on a light surface.
