Last year I rewrote Wikipedia's article on Makemake and it's now featured on the front page!! i spent 2 months hyperfixating on this topic and doing all the research and writing. It was SO worth it :D Special thanks to @renerpho.bsky.social & others for reviewing it ^^ (1/12 thread) 🔭 #planetsci
A screenshot of the "Today's featured article" section on the Main Page of Wikipedia. The section, highlighted in green, features an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Makemake:

"Makemake is a dwarf planet orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune. It has a diameter 60% that of Pluto, and is the fourth-largest trans-Neptunian object and the largest member of the Solar System's classical Kuiper belt, a disk of icy bodies beyond Neptune's orbit. Its discovery on March 31, 2005, by American astronomers Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz at Palomar Observatory contributed to the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006. Makemake's surface, like Pluto's, is largely covered by frozen methane and stained reddish-brown by tholins. It has one known satellite, unnamed, whose orbit suggests that Makemake's rotation has a high axial tilt. Makemake shows evidence of geochemical activity and cryovolcanism, which has led scientists to suspect that it might harbor a subsurface ocean of liquid water. No high-resolution images of its surface exist because it has not been visited up close by a space probe."

Our lightcurve of 2025 RL2 from last night shows that it is a fast rotator with a lightcurve amplitude of 0.7 mag. The asteroid is either tumbling with a main period of 4.36 minutes, or it has a complicated shape, resulting in a lightcurve with four peaks of different height and period 8.71 minutes.
Double-peaked lightcurve of 2025 RL2: Period 0.0726 +/- 0.0001 hours, amplitude 0.61 mag.Lightcurve of 2025 RL2 with four peaks: Period 0.1452 +/- 0.0002 hours, amplitude 0.72 hours.Split-halves phased plot of 2025 RL2, for a rotation period of 0.1452 hours. For a simple rotation, the two halves are supposed to be the same; that is not the case here, as the peaks in the first half are less deep than in the second, indicating that something more complicated is going on.

I was reminded recently of some ideas a friend and I had for a paper, back in the days when 1I/'Oumuamua was discovered. There were already some interesting things floating around back then. Surely this stuff would get us into the New York Times nowadays. ⚗️💩🔭
A (fictitious) joke paper titled "Could the interstellar visitor 1I/'Oumuamua be a giant coprolite?"
The abstract answers it fairly succinctly: Probably not.
And that's all there is to say about that kind of story, no matter what Avi wants you to believe.

@keelingcurve.bsky.social This has just been announced by the International Astronomical Union. 🔭🧪✨ www.wgsbn-iau.org/files/Bullet...
Citations for two asteroids that were newly named on 11 August 2025. One (2005 CO2) after Charles Keeling, the other (2011 EN19) after Eunice Newton Foote. The citations read:

Charles David Keeling (1928-2005) was an American climatologist who developed the first reliable instrument for measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide. In 1958, at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, he began a long-term monitoring program, showing by 1961 that carbon dioxide levels were rising. This ongoing record is now known as the Keeling Curve.

Eunice Newton Foote (1819-1888) was an American scientist and women’s rights advocate. In 1856, she demonstrated that carbon dioxide and water vapor absorb heat and hypothesized that changes in their atmospheric levels could alter the climate. She was the first to propose this phenomenon, now known as the greenhouse effect. The orbits of asteroids Keeling and Eunicefoote, in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Some early reports about the candidate interstellar object A11pl3Z wrongly indicate that the object was discovered at Deep Random Survey (that's @astrafoxen.bsky.social , Sam Deen, me, and others). I want to clarify that the object was found at ATLAS, Chile. I'm sorry for the unintended confusion.

Hiya! Over the past few months I've been silently working on several astronomy projects. Here's what I've been up to lately! 🔭☄️🧪 1. I discovered a Kuiper belt object! (2013 CG269) 2. I'm coauthor of a brand new paper by @renerpho.bsky.social et al. on the rotation of asteroid Bradyharan! (1/11)
This is a picture of the Kuiper belt object 2013 CG269, as seen by the Subaru Telescope on 24 February 2017. It shows a zoomed-in patch of sky, peppered with fuzzy white dots and smudges against a gray, grainy background. The white dot at the lower right is circled and labeled "2013 CG269" in yellow.

Coincidentally, there is an unknown faint moon of Jupiter right next to 2013 CG269. This unknown moon of Jupiter is the fainter white dot located left of center, circled and labeled "Jovian moon" in cyan.A screenshot of a scientific paper titled "LIGHTCURVE AND ROTATION PERIOD OF 46925 BRADYHARAN" in bold. Below the bolded title are the authors, whose names from top to bottom are:
Daniel P. Bamberger
Sam Deen
K. Ly (me!)
Elvis Oliveira Mendes
Arndt Schnabel
Guy Wells

To the right of the title and authors list are two rectangular plots with squiggly curves across them. The top right plot shows the brightness of asteroid 46925 Bradyharan over time, while the lower right plot shows the root-mean-square error (RMS error) of different rotation periods.

Will the Milky Way crash into the Andromeda galaxy? Maybe not.
Astronomers have long thought that the Milky Way is headed for a head-on crash with its neighbor, Andromeda. But a new study complicates the story.
