Guralp CMG 3T 120sec 50hz Broadband Seismometer, all bench tests pass. 3 axes unlocked without issue after being decommissioned in 2018 from Alaska. Found for $150 on eBay. Time to digitize it with a raspberry pi #earthquake 🧪

Forecast regarding soon-to-be major Hurricane Nolo (not to be confused w/current major Hurricane Polo) has become increasingly alarming. A close approach on Sat could bring extreme rainfall (>30 inches) to Big Island, w/risk of widespread & severe flash flooding & damaging winds.

As of late Sep 23, models showing about a 50/50 split with hurricane Polo moving up into Sonora around the 30th. Depends on the timing of the trough digging into the west coast. Looks some moisture at minimum, a lot more possible.

Finished up this DIY bandwidth extended seismometer. Similar response to a raspberry shake. Next project is digitizing a decommissioned USGS unit - Guralp CMG 3T 120sec 50hz Broadband Sensor Seismometer. Much more sensitive to lower frequency energy. Will publish DIY on that when it's done.

The storms that triggered the floods in Grand Canyon on the 29th directly hit the Dragon Bravo burn scar multiple times in the Bright Angel basin. These were strong, training thunderstorms starting around 8:30am and lasting through 11am. That lines up with a 2:40pm arrival in Phantom Ranch. #azwx 🧪

A gauge a few miles up Bright Angel Creek registered a ~6ft wall of water before being knocked offline / destroyed around 2:40pm Aug 29th. The actual jump was probably larger. This was a big flood. I'm guessing over 6000cfs. #azwx #monsoon #grandcanyon #flashflood

I wrote this article over a year ago detailing the flood risks that the Dragon Bravo fire posed to the Grand Canyon from 2025 past 2026. It appears that a worst case scenario has unfolded in the basin I called out for being the highest risk. A massive flash flood has hit Bright Angel Canyon.

An incredibly well-timed Landsat 9 pass captured the effects of yesterday’s catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border. The event was so massive that it was detected by seismometers around the world.
