Couldn't resist looking back at firehose optimization after getting STAR-lite mostly working. Looks like 3x firehose bandwidth reduction is achievable with implicit MST + previous-commit cache of CIDs per repo.
two scatter charts:
first has two paired series: "raw: cid cache" + "raw: implicit cid" (second is smaller by a constant ~6%); and "zstd cid cache (+bundled) + zstd: estimated implicit", again the second improves by a roughly constant 6%.

both follow a sort of exponential decay toward a limit: first pair bottoms out around 60%; second around 33%.

the second chart has "did-cid cache hit ratio" and "overall cid hit ratio". both are kind of opposite of the last chart: rapid initial rise, slowing to some apparent limit.

did-cid cache: corners around 65% but keeps growing to around 80%, hasn't quite levelled off. overal cid hit ratio: levels at about 30%. might grow a bit more but not much.

new from me: on recent discourse and drama on Mastodon. the software gives people the tools to create community via instances, with a wide plurality of cultures and communities. But what people want is a singular culture/community on the federation layer connectedplaces.online/reports/fr15...

finally got round to setting up a ko-fi in case that's easier for people than github sponsors. I just turned down a contract in part bc the person couldn't do me the courtesy of writing a draft of the scope document herself, or even feeding my previous recommendations into chatgpt. ko-fi.com/orual

Hey y'all! One of the things I took from #AtmosphereConf was that there's still a hole to fill to make it easier for users to back up their identities and that something like a mobile app may do that. So if you're interested, please take a bit of time to answer the questions to help shape that app.

A little late because of travel and whatnot, but here's my #weeknotes! I went up to Vancouver (my first time overseas!) to attend #ATmosphereConf, and I wrote about my experience there, being able to finally meet online friends and other people within the ATmosphere. ovyerus.com/weeknotes/20...
